🧐 Overview
Sermon Summary: This Christmas service is a powerful example of how historic liturgy and heartfelt worship can combine to create a deeply faithful and Christ-centered experience, anchored by timeless scriptural truth.
Big Idea: N/A - Liturgical Service, No Sermon Proposition Found N/A
Pastoral Analysis: This liturgical service is theologically robust, characterized by its adherence to scriptural readings, orthodox creeds (Apostles' Creed), and Christ-focused hymnody. The absence of a formal sermon is offset by the theological depth of the liturgy itself, making it a sound and edifying act of corporate worship.
Biblical Parallel(Archetype): Philadelphia — The service combines strong doctrinal fidelity, evidenced by the liturgical use of Scripture and the Apostles' Creed, with warm pastoral care and a clear focus on Christ's incarnation.
🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard
Overall Verdict: Biblically Sound
| Category | Status | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Soteriology | ✅ PASS | Salvation is clearly articulated through the recitation of the Apostles' Creed, which grounds redemption in the person and work of Jesus Christ—His incarnation, substitutionary death, burial, and resurrection. |
| Bibliology | ✅ PASS | Scripture is held as the clear authority, used for the call to worship (Psalm 150), Advent readings (John 3:16), and as the foundation for all liturgical elements. There is no appeal to extra-biblical authority. |
| Hermeneutic | ✅ PASS | The use of Scripture is straightforward and Christological. The service interprets the Old Testament promises as fulfilled in the birth of Christ, demonstrating a sound redemptive-historical approach. |
| Theology Proper | ✅ PASS | God is presented as Triune through the Trinitarian formulas in prayers, the benediction, and the structure of the Apostles' Creed. His attributes of love, holiness, and sovereignty are consistently affirmed. |
| Sacramentology | ⚪ N/A | Communion was not observed during the service, so an evaluation cannot be made. |

✅ Commendations
Liturgical Integrity | Faithful Use of the Apostles' Creed
At [00:25:44 ▶️ 📄], reciting the Apostles' Creed provides a strong, objective anchor for the congregation's faith, summarizing the core tenets of salvation history in a corporate confession. This practice instructs and unifies the church in essential doctrine.
Christ-Centered Worship | Thematic Focus on the Incarnation
The entire service, from the Advent candle lighting [00:26:37 ▶️ 📄] to the hymnody and choral pieces, maintains a clear and joyful focus on the person and work of Jesus Christ as Emmanuel, 'God with us'.
Pastoral Shepherding | Compassionate Care for the Grieving
At [00:31:53 ▶️ 📄], the pastor's public prayer for a family mourning a loss was a powerful example of shepherding, grounding their comfort not in sentiment, but in the 'certain hope' [00:32:52 ▶️ 📄] of the resurrection.
🧠 Questions for Reflection
Use these questions for personal study or small group discussion:
- The service mentioned a 'certain hope' in the face of death. What is the basis for that certainty according to the Bible?
- The Apostles' Creed was recited, which is a very old summary of Christian belief. What does it mean that Jesus 'descended into hell,' and why is that part of the story of salvation?

All ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
[00:23:37] [SPEAKER UNKNOWN]:
Drowned and beholden, born and king again,
[00:23:43] of Christ Jesus Christ of Latter Day
[00:24:37] Christ the Lord.

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_05]:
Now in flesh appearing O come let us adore Him O come let us adore Him O come let us adore Him Christ
[00:25:44] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_12]:
Would you join me now in affirming our faith together with the Apostles' Creed?
[00:25:49] I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.
[00:26:07] He descended into hell.
[00:26:10] The third day he rose again from the dead.
[00:26:13] He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
[00:26:19] From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
[00:26:23] I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
[00:26:35] Amen.
[00:26:37] And I invite now the Scholler family for the lighting of our Advent candle.
[00:26:40] And you may be seated again.
[00:26:57] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]:
Last Sunday we lit the candle of joy.
[00:27:01] We lit it and the candles of hope and peace again as we remember that Christ who was born in Bethlehem will come again to fulfill all of God's promises and bring us everlasting peace and joy.
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]:
The fourth candle of Advent is the candle of love.
[00:27:20] God's love is a perfect love.
[00:27:23] It holds nothing back.
[00:27:24] God in love gives us everything we need
[00:27:27] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_11]:
The Bible says that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
[00:27:41] Jesus shows us God's perfect love.
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_09]:
This is what love is like.
[00:27:49] Love is patient.
[00:27:51] Love is kind and envies no one.
[00:27:54] Love is never boastful or conceited or rude or selfish.
[00:27:59] Love is not quick to take offense.
[00:28:02] It keeps no records of wrongs.
[00:28:05] It does not gloat over other people's troubles, but rejoices in the right, the good, and the true.
[00:28:12] There is nothing that love cannot face.
[00:28:16] There is no limit to its faith.
[00:28:18] to its hope or to its endurance.
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_08]:
Love never ends.
[00:28:26] We light the candle of love to remind us that Jesus brings us God's love and shows us how to love others.
[00:28:33] Let us pray.
[00:28:33] Thank you God for the love that you give us.
[00:28:38] As we wait for all of your promises to come true and for Christ to come again, assure us of your presence with us.
[00:28:45] Help us today and every day to worship you, to hear your word,
[00:28:48] and to do your will by sharing your love with others.
[00:28:52] We pray in the name of the one who was born in Bethlehem.
[00:28:55] Amen.
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_10]:
So it's a joy to worship with you this morning, highlight a couple different announcements in your bulletin.
[00:29:17] You see we have three Christmas Eve services.
[00:29:21] The first one is at 5 o'clock.
[00:29:24] That's the child-friendly one, and they'll be enacting through the tableau the manger scene and the birth of the Christ child.
[00:29:32] So we invite anyone can come to that service, but we highly emphasize it'll be noisy, and we love the noise.
[00:29:39] and there'll be babies crying and all of that we do not that the service the traditional sermon would be the enactment through the children uh 7 30 it says here it's a little conflicting we actually in one place it says 7 30 one place it says seven i want to clarify 7 30 is the candlelight service and uh it will be a traditional christmas eve service will be a message also candlelight at the end we sing silent night that's at 7 30 and then at the 11 o'clock we have uh
[00:30:09] what we'll call the the midnight service it ends at midnight with communion it's in the other building the 143 as a contemporary service and one thing i want to to recognize in that service it will be carrie smith her last time officially on staff with us leading worship and i wanted to acknowledge uh four and a half years ago is when carrie started with us we were at the tail end of covid
[00:30:35] If you can recall, we had hired a director of music that was supposed to be waiting for a month for a visa that took almost a year, or maybe even more than a year.
[00:30:45] And Carrie, we hired over at the other building to lead contemporary worship as an interim.
[00:30:52] And the interim, we started off with 100 chairs in the room, and we'd fill about 50.
[00:30:57] And then we started filling the room.
[00:30:58] We had 120 chairs, then 160 chairs, and then we put 200 chairs.
[00:31:02] And the next thing we knew, we had two contemporary services, and she's been here
[00:31:06] Throughout that time, helping to not only bridge the gap with our new music director, but she became our permanent contemporary leader.
[00:31:13] So we are forever grateful for the role that you've played.
[00:31:17] We have a gift for you, but it will be at the Christmas Eve service, and we'll present that to you formally.
[00:31:23] But we wanted to acknowledge you in this service.
[00:31:25] And would you all just, would you stand and let's acknowledge.
[00:31:48] Thank you all, and that's a cruel thing to do right before you sing another song.
[00:31:53] Before we go into a time of prayer, I do want to acknowledge earlier in this week Maggie, Walt Jones' wife, passed to be with the Lord, and I believe Walt is here this morning sitting in the back.
[00:32:06] Walt, our prayers are with you, and I think your son Russell's in the back as well.
[00:32:11] I know that's been a long stretch of her illness, and for her to be at peace, we celebrate with you.
[00:32:17] We also together with you mourn that loss.
[00:32:20] We love you all and our prayers are with you and your family.
[00:32:23] Let's take a moment of prayer before we continue on in worship.
[00:32:26] Please join me.
[00:32:29] Heavenly Father, we do thank you for the gift of life.
[00:32:33] And Lord, as we acknowledge another child of yours, a daughter, Maggie, joining you in heaven, we celebrate.
[00:32:42] We celebrate that she's whole, that she's at peace.
[00:32:45] Lord, at this time of year, there are others in this room that are also mourning the loss of a loved one.
[00:32:52] And Lord, we as believers, we live with that hope, not wishful thinking, but that certain hope through our faith that we will see those loved ones again.
[00:33:02] Lord, we celebrate that they're in your presence.
[00:33:05] Lord, we ask peace for those this Christmas that may be struggling with temporary loss.
[00:33:11] Lord, bring them comfort, bring them joy, that deep-rooted joy.
[00:33:15] and Lord give them the the peace that passes our human understanding.
[00:33:20] Lord this morning we celebrate the Christ child who was born into a broken world that suffered in the same way that we are subject to suffering and pain and loss and Lord he he did so on our behalf not only did he die on our behalf but he conquered death so that we may have life a different quality of life
[00:33:45] A life of eternity.
[00:33:48] So Lord, words cannot express our gratitude.
[00:33:52] This morning, may our music, may the instruments, we are grateful for our guests, may the voices, may the prayers all be presented in a way that glorifies the Christ child and worships you.
[00:34:07] Lord, we dedicate this service to you.
[00:34:09] And Lord, as we continue in worship with one voice,
[00:34:13] We join in on that prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.
[00:34:15] We offer it to you.
[00:34:17] Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
[00:34:21] Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
[00:34:27] Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debt.
[00:34:34] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
[00:34:38] For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
[00:34:53] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_13]:
It's called Holy Forever.
[00:34:54] It's a Chris Tomlin song.
[00:34:56] It's one, this is, he actually rewrote the verses to make it a Christmas version of the song.
[00:35:03] But y'all will recognize the chorus.
[00:35:05] So we are going to, in the intro, we'll play through that melody to kind of give y'all a remembrance of the song.
[00:35:10] But let's stand to our feet and sing the song together.
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_14]:
Held within a manger the Son of God arrived The one who would be called Emmanuel The promise was delivered unto a virgin bride The one who would be called Emmanuel
