🧐 Overview
Sermon Summary: Most of us have been told the story of David and Goliath is about finding the courage to defeat the 'giants' in our own lives. This sermon powerfully argues that we've missed the point entirely. It reveals how this ancient account is not a self-help manual but a powerful prophecy of the one true Champion, Jesus Christ, who fought the battle we could never win.
Big Idea: The story of David and Goliath is not about you defeating your giants. It's about King Jesus, the champion who steps in to fight the battle you can't win. [00:32:53 ▶️ 📄]
Pastoral Analysis: This is a strong example of Christ-centered, redemptive-historical preaching. The speaker skillfully dismantles the common moralistic interpretation of 1 Samuel 17, correctly re-centering the narrative on its typological fulfillment in Christ. The sermon clearly articulates the 'giants' of Sin, Death, and Judgment, and presents Jesus as the sole victor. The application flows directly from this theological foundation, motivating listeners through gratitude for Christ's finished work rather than through a 'try harder' imperative. The doctrine is sound, the presentation is passionate, and the gospel is clear.
Biblical Parallel(Archetype): Philadelphia — The sermon demonstrates sound doctrine, warm gospel affections, and a clear connection to the active mission of the church, reflecting a faithful body with an 'open door' for ministry.
🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard
Overall Verdict: Biblically Sound
| Category | Status | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Soteriology | ✅ PASS | The sermon is functionally monergistic, clearly stating that salvation is the work of Christ, the Champion, who fights the battle the believer cannot win. It rightly grounds salvation in His substitutionary work. |
| Bibliology | ✅ PASS | The authority and sufficiency of Scripture are upheld. The sermon models a hermeneutic that sees Christ as the central theme of all Scripture. |
| Hermeneutic | ✅ PASS | The hermeneutic is exemplary, employing Christological typology to move from the Old Testament narrative to its New Testament fulfillment. It actively corrects a common misinterpretation (moralism) and replaces it with a gospel-centered reading. |
| Theology Proper | ✅ PASS | The sermon affirms the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity and the Hypostatic Union of Christ. God is presented as sovereign, holy, just, and merciful. |

📖 How they Handle Scripture & Jesus
Primary Text: 1 Samuel 17 (Narrative) (Expository (Deep))
Scripture Saturation: Verses Read: 15 | Referenced: 3 | Alluded: 0
Passages Read Aloud:
Key References: Genesis, Revelation, John 10
Christological Connection: Redemptive Trajectory: The sermon explicitly uses Christological typology (Better Adam, Better Noah, Better David) to demonstrate that the David and Goliath narrative is not a moralistic self-help story, but a historical event pointing toward Jesus, the ultimate champion who defeats the giants of Sin, Death, and Judgment.
🧱 Sermon Outline
- Jesus is a Better David (Introduction & Context) [00:20:05 ▶️ 📄] : Jesus is the crimson cord throughout the Old Testament, fulfilling the roles of Adam, Noah, and David. David and Goliath is not about self-help, but about the necessity of a champion.
- The Giant of Sin [00:33:13 ▶️ 📄] : Sin is defined as corruption, insurrection, and diminishing humanity. This giant can only be defeated by Jesus, the Lamb of God.
- The Giants of Death and the Devil [00:39:10 ▶️ 📄] : Jesus became human to die and break the power of the devil, setting us free from the fear of dying.
- The Giant of Judgment [00:42:42 ▶️ 📄] : God takes judgment seriously, which is why Jesus was judged on the cross. Those who belong to Christ face no condemnation.
- Conclusion and Call to Trust [00:46:17 ▶️ 📄] : A final appeal to stop fighting the battle yourself and trust Jesus, the undefeated champion.
🗝️ Key Topics & Themes
- Jesus is Better : The overarching theme that Jesus fulfills and surpasses Old Testament figures (Typology).
- Sin : Defined as corruption, insurrection against God, and diminishing humanity.
- Generosity : Highlighted through the church's medical debt cancellation and the 'All Give Sunday' offering.
- Condemnation : The freedom from judgment found in belonging to Christ.
✅ Commendations
Hermeneutics | Excellent Christ-Centered Interpretation
The central proposition at 00:32:53 ▶️ 📄—that David and Goliath is not about us defeating our giants but about Jesus defeating the giants we cannot—is a masterful and biblically faithful corrective to one of the most commonly moralized stories in Scripture. This is the essence of sound redemptive-historical preaching.
Doctrine of Sin (Hamartiology) | Robust and Biblical Definition of Sin
The sermon provides a multi-faceted and accurate definition of sin as corruption, insurrection against God's kingship, and a force that diminishes humanity (00:33:33 ▶️ 📄 - 00:35:18 ▶️ 📄). This avoids the common error of reducing sin to mere mistakes or societal ills, properly framing it as a vertical rebellion requiring a divine Champion.
Gospel Application | Connecting Doctrine to Diakonia
The announcement regarding the cancellation of $34.9 million in medical debt (00:17:56 ▶️ 📄) serves as a powerful, tangible illustration of the sermon's core theme. It beautifully connects the theological reality of our spiritual debt being canceled by Christ to the church's practical ministry of canceling financial debt for others, showing that sound doctrine fuels true compassion.
🧠 Questions for Reflection
Use these questions for personal study or small group discussion:
- The pastor said that trying to defeat our biggest problems (like guilt, fear, and death) on our own is like trying to fight a giant we can't beat. Have you ever felt that way? What if the story isn't about you fighting harder, but about a Champion who has already won for you?
- The sermon connected the church paying off millions in medical debt to the idea that Jesus paid a spiritual debt for us on the cross. What does the concept of a 'debt' you can't pay, but that someone else pays for you, mean to you personally?

[00:15:38] Well, right now, it's time to welcome Pastor Derwin, so put your hands together and let's welcome Pastor Derwin!
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]:
All righty then, let's give a big welcome to all of our guests at Transformation Church Lake Wiley, Transformation Church Indian Land, and our friends that are watching literally from around the world and around the corner.
[00:15:59] Let's welcome our first time guests.
[00:16:01] Thank you so much for being here.
[00:16:03] If this is your first time and you see us all wearing red, I can assure you we are not a cult.
[00:16:11] There's a purpose behind the red primarily to symbolize
[00:16:16] The blood of Jesus that gives us hope, but also to symbolize what we've been talking about in our entire sermon series, Jesus is Better, which I'll get to in a moment.
[00:16:26] But before I do, I cannot forget about our brothers and sisters in the 1,400-plus correctional facility partnerships.
[00:16:35] Let's give it up for the mighty men, the incredible women.
[00:16:39] Yes.
[00:16:40] And CC Family, it is so, so good to see you guys.
[00:16:43] So before I dive into my sermon series, into our sermon, I've got a big announcement I'm super excited about.
[00:16:50] So, in case you don't know, there are some people that will not go to the doctor when they're sick because they can't pay for it, they don't have insurance.
[00:17:00] Insurance medical debt is one of the great burdens in our culture.
[00:17:06] This is just my opinion, this ain't scripture, so I'm doing opinion on this part right here.
[00:17:11] For a country that is the richest in the history of humanity to have people who don't go to the doctor because they don't have insurance, I think it's criminal, I think it's sad.
[00:17:22] Now, we as a church, now I'm back to the Bible now.
[00:17:24] Now we as a church have a choice.
[00:17:27] We can go, oh, look at, this is bad, this is bad.
[00:17:30] Or we can roll up our sleeves in the gospel and do something good.
[00:17:37] And so, Transformation Church, I want you to know, this Christmas season, because of your financial generosity of giving, and as you know, we give away 15% of whatever comes into Transformation Church.
[00:17:51] We go above the tithe.
[00:17:53] Because of your generosity,
[00:17:56] This Christmas, for over 17,500 people in North Carolina and South Carolina, you have canceled $34.9 million of medical debt.
[00:18:14] Hey, there's gonna be people this Christmas season who go, what, my debt has been canceled?
[00:18:20] And ideally, ideally, we wanna show people that that financial debt that's been canceled is nothing compared to the spiritual debt that the red blood of Jesus cancels.
[00:18:31] Secondly, secondly, before I get to my sermon, in our culture, there's a lot of talk about, you know, the church doesn't do anything.
[00:18:38] Listen, if you know people like that, bring them to hang out with us, and we will show them our free grocery store.
[00:18:45] We will show them the school partnerships.
[00:18:48] We will show them all the things and the medical debt, and then we'll ask them to financially give to support it, and then that's when people usually run off.
[00:18:57] Like, no, let me just criticize, but let me keep my greed myself.
[00:19:01] Guys, I am so proud in a Jesus biblical way of our heart to touch people's lives.
[00:19:09] It's utterly beautiful.
[00:19:11] So, great job, gang.
[00:19:14] Since 2010, if you're new here, Transformation Church, because of your faith and love for Jesus and people,
[00:19:21] We have canceled $62.6 million of medical debt since 2010.
[00:19:33] Y'all, that's almost $100 million.
[00:19:37] Now, so this is what we're gonna do.
[00:19:40] We're all gonna go to social media and tell the billionaires that they can help us.
[00:19:45] There's over 600 in America.
[00:19:47] Imagine if just five said, we'll do it.
[00:19:50] It wouldn't even be pocket change auditor.
[00:19:52] Nevermind.
[00:19:54] Maybe I'm just too naive and too hopeful, right?
[00:19:57] I'd rather be a fool dreaming that something good can happen than to be a curmudgeon.
[00:20:02] That's what we're gonna be, that kind of people.
[00:20:05] All right, let's dive into our sermon series.
[00:20:07] So we're walking through the Bible.
[00:20:11] And what we're learning is that Jesus is the crimson cord from Genesis all the way to Revelation.
[00:20:18] What does that mean exactly?
[00:20:20] It means that every important historical person in the Hebrew Testament, the Old Testament, is actually a picture of what Jesus came to do.
[00:20:31] For example, Jesus is the better Adam.
[00:20:35] Adam hid under a tree, Jesus died on a tree.
[00:20:39] Jesus is a better Noah.
[00:20:41] Noah saved people from the wrath with a wooden boat.
[00:20:43] Jesus saved people from the flood of wrath with a wooden cross.
[00:20:47] Jesus is a better Joseph.
[00:20:50] And today we're gonna learn that Jesus is a better David.
[00:20:55] Now here's why this is important.
[00:20:57] Let's say if we lived in AD 39.
[00:21:03] We didn't have a New Testament to show Jewish people that Jesus was the Messiah.
[00:21:08] They had to use the Old Testament.
[00:21:10] And the way that they used the Old Testament, which the Jewish people called the Tanakh, the way they would use it is they would show how Jesus is a greater Noah, a greater Moses.
[00:21:20] So what I'm teaching you is, comes a big word, proper hermeneutics of the Bible.
[00:21:26] Hermeneutics comes from the word Hermes or message.
[00:21:29] Exegesis means to pull out of Scripture.
[00:21:32] If you interpret Scripture wrongly, you'll get frustrated and get mad with God.
[00:21:37] Case in point, y'all, David and Goliath is the ultimate story of super frustration.
[00:21:43] And it goes this way.
[00:21:46] And God is calling you to pick up your five smooth stones and whatever your giant is, grab them stones and throw it and hit him.
[00:21:56] Question.
[00:21:58] If you knock out Goliath, does that save the nation of Israel so Jesus can be born in Bethlehem as the Messiah?
[00:22:05] That was the point of the story of David and Goliath.
[00:22:08] Besides, what if you miss?
[00:22:12] What if your arms ain't strong enough?
[00:22:15] And then you know what you just did?
[00:22:17] You just made the Bible about you and missed this whole story.
[00:22:21] That if David doesn't defeat Goliath, guess what happens to the children of Israel?
[00:22:25] They're in slavery again, just like they were in Egypt.
[00:22:29] If they're in slavery, guess who don't come?
[00:22:31] The Messiah to save us.
[00:22:33] So now we got a bigger problem than just a nine foot giant, but I'm moving ahead of the story.
[00:22:41] Let's pause there.
[00:22:43] Some of y'all are like, man, I like that story.
[00:22:46] You know, it feeds your ego.
[00:22:49] Edging God out.
[00:22:50] Look what I did, I defeated it.
[00:22:53] Well, you may have, but you're missing the context of it.
[00:22:56] And if it leads to pride, did you really defeat it or did you feed your ego?
[00:23:02] Did it lead to self-worship and glorification or did it lead to worshiping God?
[00:23:07] By the way, my preaching will frustrate you if you like self-help motivational stuff.
[00:23:12] You're going to be like, man, I want to do something.
[00:23:15] Like, no, I want you to see, oh God, I want you to see that Jesus has done something.
[00:23:20] I want you to see His grace.
[00:23:23] I want you to be overwhelmed with Him.
[00:23:25] I want you to be intoxicated with Him.
[00:23:28] I want you to be undone with Him, mesmerized by Him.
[00:23:31] Speak of Him.
[00:23:32] Worship Him.
[00:23:33] It's His church.
[00:23:34] It should be about Him.
[00:23:35] It's His book.
[00:23:36] You're His people.
[00:23:37] It's His blood.
[00:23:38] Shouldn't it be about Him?
[00:23:41] By the way, the world would be vastly different if pulpits talked more about Jesus and what he's done than what you gotta do.
[00:23:48] That's why some of y'all frustrated now.
[00:23:50] Some of you feel like failure's constant.
[00:23:52] Man, I got my five stones and I threw them and I'm missing.
[00:23:56] Like what if you're short, your eyesight ain't good, what you gonna do then with the little giant?
[00:24:01] What if your arms are skinny?
[00:24:07] Here we go teenagers, let's get in this.
[00:24:09] How is Jesus a better David?
[00:24:11] David fights the enemy God's people, the nation of Israel, cannot defeat.
[00:24:17] But let me give you the back story.
[00:24:19] Once again, God makes a promise, it's called a covenant, with a man by the name of Abraham.
[00:24:27] And he says, Abraham, through you, I'm going to bless the world.
[00:24:30] And guys, the blessing isn't a plot of dust in the Middle East.
[00:24:34] The blessing was a baby born in Bethlehem who grew up to die on a cross.
[00:24:39] That's the blessing.
[00:24:40] Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Israel.
[00:24:43] Israel's Jacob.
[00:24:44] And we learned a story about Joseph because we just learned that and how they got set free.
[00:24:51] Egypt and went to the Promised Land and all of a sudden God's people are like, hey God, we don't want you as king anymore, we want a man as king.
[00:25:02] By the way, that's still alive and well today.
[00:25:08] And God's like, you sure?
[00:25:09] Yeah, that's what we want.
[00:25:10] So he goes, okay, Saul's your king.
[00:25:12] Now, y'all, Saul was about 6'4", about 210, ripped, played free safety for the Bethlehem Broncos.
[00:25:21] I mean, he was like the man, but he was a narcissist lunatic, lost his mind.
[00:25:26] And God's like, yeah, you're not my king no more.
[00:25:28] You're not leading my people.
[00:25:30] So he gets his prophet Samuel, and he's like, Samuel, my guy, I want you to go to Bethlehem, because there's a king there.
[00:25:37] By the way, hint, hint, who else was born in Bethlehem?
[00:25:43] So Samuel rose up on a dude named Jesse.
[00:25:46] Jesse's got seven sons.
[00:25:48] Jesse's son!
[00:25:53] I'm a Gen X man, that was a song back in the day, don't worry about it, don't worry about it.
[00:25:58] So Samuel immediately goes like, oh, the oldest son is him.
[00:26:02] He had an eight pack.
[00:26:03] He had long, luxurious hair.
[00:26:05] It was great.
[00:26:06] No, that's not him.
[00:26:07] Then finally, the last son, Jesse's like, I got one more boy, but you don't want him.
[00:26:12] He's been out with the sheep, smells like sheep, blank.
[00:26:15] And he's just a little guy.
[00:26:18] Samuel sees him and anoints him as king.
[00:26:21] Never forget this.
[00:26:23] He was anointed as king before he ever sat on a throne.
[00:26:27] Don't wait till you get somewhere to act like you belong there.
[00:26:32] Man, y'all ain't picking up what I'm putting down.
[00:26:36] Okay, for those of you, I gotta go, I gotta go.
[00:26:40] So anyway, the Philistines want to take over Israel, but here's how it worked back in the day.
[00:26:48] is when nations and armies were gonna fight, they would choose a champion.
[00:26:52] So on one side of a ravine was the Philistines and Goliath would come out for 40 days and basically taunt the nation of Israel and they would be on the other side.
[00:27:03] By the way, for my doctoral work, my last class was going to Israel and we were in the very valley where this battle took place and the way it's shaped is there's mountains on one side and so when you speak, your voice bounces off the wall.
[00:27:17] And I was speaking like this, but it was booming.
[00:27:20] So imagine if a nine foot six somebody is speaking.
[00:27:24] They were probably terrified.
[00:27:25] They probably didn't understand acoustics and sound, right?
[00:27:29] So,
[00:27:31] Philistine says, this is our champion.
[00:27:33] Israel, bring me your champion.
[00:27:34] So the way they fought back then is whole countries wouldn't go.
[00:27:37] One representative.
[00:27:38] On a side note, I don't think there would be as many wars if presidents of countries had to go and fight the wars instead of sending your kids and my kids to fight.
[00:27:48] Can you imagine Putin's like, I'm gonna go to Ukraine and fight.
[00:27:52] No, I ain't gonna send our kids to go fight.
[00:27:56] Yeah, think about it.
[00:27:57] Wars would be like, yeah, you know, let's work this out.
[00:28:02] Yeah.
[00:28:05] So, David, teenager, takes some food to his brothers.
[00:28:12] He rolls up on the scene and he sees something crazy.
[00:28:15] He sees Goliath like cussing out the nation of Israel, cussing out the Israel men, and they're all afraid.
[00:28:21] And David's like, what's wrong with y'all?
[00:28:24] And he's like, I'll go fight him.
[00:28:26] And you know what David's brother did?
[00:28:28] Man, just go back.
[00:28:29] What are you here for bringing food?
[00:28:31] Just go back.
[00:28:33] By the way, people usually will criticize you for doing something they don't have the courage to do.
[00:28:40] Don't listen.
[00:28:42] Let me say it again.
[00:28:44] Don't listen.
[00:28:45] And by the way, faith spreads and so does fear.
[00:28:49] Hey, mom and dad, stop parenting your kids with fear.
[00:28:53] Ooh, the big bad world.
[00:28:54] Ain't greater in me that is in you than in the world?
[00:28:58] Isn't our God raised from the dead?
[00:29:00] Isn't he the king of kings?
[00:29:01] Why y'all scared of everything?
[00:29:03] Ooh, they gonna give us cooties.
[00:29:04] No, we gonna give them grace.
[00:29:06] The best defense is to equip your kids to call them out.
[00:29:10] Don't, oh Lord, bless little Johnny today.
[00:29:14] God's like, prepare your son for battle.
[00:29:17] And then our weapons are faith and hope and love.
[00:29:21] And you put your hands and say, you got the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the whole armor of God, or are they just used to you talking about fantasy football?
[00:29:31] Do they see you more passionate, dad, about your little college football team and your little parlay bet?
[00:29:39] Speak life over them!
[00:29:42] One of the reasons we're in the position we are in now is because we walk around so, ooh, the sinners are gonna get us.
[00:29:48] No, guys, it's the other way around.
[00:29:50] God has sent us into the world to love them, to be with them, not be afraid of them.
[00:29:56] I don't know, that ain't in the Bible.
[00:29:58] Let me get back to this.
[00:29:59] So, David's like, I'll go fight, so let's pick up the story.
[00:30:05] By the way, teenagers, he's a teenager.
[00:30:07] So you don't have to wait till you're 40, blow through some marriages and an incredible debt and filled with anxiety, go, I should've believed.
[00:30:13] You can believe now.
[00:30:16] Then the Philistines said, I defy the ranks of Israel today.
[00:30:20] Send me a man so we can fight each other.
[00:30:23] When Saul and all Israel heard these words from the Philistine, they lost their courage and were terrified.
[00:30:33] David said to Saul, don't let anyone be discouraged by him.
[00:30:39] Notice this is a teenager leading the adults.
[00:30:42] Quickly, teenagers, teenagers, right here, right here.
[00:30:45] Everybody else, y'all just chill.
[00:30:46] Teenagers, young adults, don't do like we've done.
[00:30:51] Don't get in massive amounts of debt.
[00:30:53] Don't buy stuff to impress people who are not impressed because they're drowning in debt too.
[00:30:57] Don't sell your soul like, hey, hey, I'm going to get this job.
[00:31:01] Be careful.
[00:31:01] The very job you may get may keep you from your family.
[00:31:04] I promise you, when your kids get older, a bigger house, a bigger car, and what they're going to remember, they're going to remember the big time you spent with them.
[00:31:10] They're going to remember your apologies.
[00:31:11] They're going to remember your kindness.
[00:31:13] They're going to remember the way you treated their mama.
[00:31:17] Ah, don't be talking about why I'm doing this for my kids.
[00:31:20] You're doing it for your dead dad so he can still approve of you.
[00:31:23] You're doing it for your ego.
[00:31:24] Now don't get me wrong.
[00:31:25] I want us all to do well and make a bunch of money, not to increase our standard of living, but to increase our standard of giving.
[00:31:32] Give me an amen from about nine of y'all.
[00:31:34] So teenagers, now is the moment.
[00:31:39] So David's leading.
[00:31:43] But Saul replied, you can't fight this Philistine.
[00:31:47] You're just a youth.
[00:31:48] And he has been a warrior since he was young.
[00:31:52] David answered Saul, your servant has been tending his father's sheep.
[00:31:57] Who else tends his father's sheep?
[00:32:00] John chapter 10, Jesus.
[00:32:04] Whenever a lion and the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion,
[00:32:11] And a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock.
[00:32:15] I went after it, struck it down, rescued the lamb from its mouth.
[00:32:21] If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down and kill it.
[00:32:26] I mean, he grabbing fur.
[00:32:31] So David ran to the line.
[00:32:32] We know the story.
[00:32:33] He's got his five smooth stones.
[00:32:35] He defeated the Philistine with a sling and stone.
[00:32:38] David overpowered the Philistine and killed him without having a sword.
[00:32:43] And the Philistines ran off and Israel is preserved.
[00:32:48] It's an incredible story, but here's what the story's really about.
[00:32:53] The story of David and Goliath is not about you defeating your giants.
[00:33:00] It's about King Jesus, the champion who steps in to fight the battle you can't win.
[00:33:10] Well, what is exactly this battle?
[00:33:13] There's a Goliath that none of us can win.
[00:33:17] It's the giant of sin.
[00:33:21] Matter of fact, and I wanna pause here, because typically,
[00:33:26] If you've grown up in church, or even if you haven't grown up in church, we think of sin like, ooh, I made a little boo-boo, I made a little mistake.
[00:33:33] So number one, first of all, sin, which means to miss the mark, is a corruption of our entire being.
[00:33:39] Like we're born separated from God.
[00:33:41] Now some people go, I don't like that.
[00:33:43] Now respect, I respect that, but let me ask you this.
[00:33:46] Who tells a three-year-old child to be selfish?
[00:33:50] Where do they learn know and mind?
[00:33:53] How is know and mind their first words?
[00:33:56] Like, why do we have to teach character education?
[00:34:01] Why do we have to teach ethics?
[00:34:04] Why do you yell at your kids when they disobey?
[00:34:08] Who told them, like, you know what, mom?
[00:34:10] I'm just gonna disobey, because it's good.
[00:34:13] That's just a small example, but if we take that largely, just think of our own families.
[00:34:20] Think of the family secrets we got that we can't tell nobody about.
[00:34:24] Do you know how many of my friends in the last five years have taken DNA tests and have found out that their dads aren't their dads in the amount of counseling they've had to go through?
[00:34:35] It's a real thing.
[00:34:38] Think about the greed.
[00:34:39] Human trafficking is a big problem.
[00:34:43] Pedophilia is a big problem.
[00:34:44] I hope we as Christians still think that's a bad sin.
[00:34:48] And then, sin is not just a corruptive thing, it's also an insurrection.
[00:34:55] It's telling the king, I want to be king.
[00:35:00] And you know what's sad is God like created us to rule and to reign with him.
[00:35:05] Listen, God is not into behavior management.
[00:35:10] He's into creating teammates to partner with him to bring light into darkness.
[00:35:17] Thirdly, you know what else sin does?
[00:35:18] Sin diminishes our humanity.
[00:35:22] I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan.
[00:35:26] Do you guys remember Gollum in My Precious?
[00:35:30] And like we think about how ugly he was, but he wasn't that way.
[00:35:34] His idolatry
[00:35:36] Dehumanized him into something grotesque.
[00:35:41] And that's what happens to our souls, is we may look good on the outside, but on the inside, we are broken.
[00:35:47] And so, there's two ways to deal with sin.
[00:35:50] Either I can scrub myself clean and approach God, or I can step into the shower of God's eternal waterfall, better yet, blood fall,
[00:36:03] and say, God, you cleanse me.
[00:36:05] And so this giant can only be defeated by a true champion.
[00:36:11] And that true champion is a lamb.
[00:36:16] I don't know about you, this is just me, but I'm thinking if I'm gonna defeat sin, man, I'm flying down like Thor, throwing a hammer.
[00:36:26] That's what I would do.
[00:36:28] But God's a lamb led to slaughter.
[00:36:33] Isn't it amazing that he defeats sin not with violence, but violence done to him?
[00:36:42] The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, look, the Lamb of God
[00:36:48] who takes away the sin of the world.
[00:36:51] So watch this.
[00:36:52] All of us are born outside of the kingdom.
[00:36:55] We're born spiritually dead and when we trust Jesus to give us that shower of forgiveness, when we get into the kingdom, that shower doesn't stop.
[00:37:05] It continues.
[00:37:07] As a matter of fact, one of the first verses I memorized, my mentor said, Derwin, Dewey, you need to memorize this.
[00:37:12] 1 John 1, 9.
[00:37:14] If we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.
[00:37:21] Righteousness.
[00:37:21] Can I just say something for a minute?
[00:37:24] And this is my hope for you and my hope for me.
[00:37:26] I can't help you with it, but the Holy Spirit can.
[00:37:29] Don't let the songs just ricochet in your mind and give you goosebumps.
[00:37:33] Don't let the sermon just ricochet in your mind.
[00:37:36] But when you begin to think about it, oh my God, God has forgiven me of everything that I've ever done or what I will ever do.
[00:37:44] I want to pour my heart out to Him because He's loved me this way.
[00:37:48] And number two, number two, quickly, quickly,
[00:37:51] How can we have low self-esteem when God gave Himself for you?
[00:37:54] What can somebody do to take away your worth
[00:37:59] When God took away your sin, what can you accomplish that's greater than the greatest treasure of the universe given his life for you?
[00:38:07] You see, our problem is not self-esteem.
[00:38:09] It's not self-esteem low or high.
[00:38:11] Our problem is our focus.
[00:38:13] Get your eyes off yourself.
[00:38:15] Get your mind off yourself.
[00:38:16] It ain't about you.
[00:38:17] It ain't about me.
[00:38:18] It is about him.
[00:38:19] And when we learn that it's about him, that's when we really find us.
[00:38:23] That's what it means to lose your life is because you're preoccupied with the one who said, you're worth it.
[00:38:30] You're looking for some dude to tell you you're worth it.
[00:38:34] You're looking for some girl to tell you you're worth it.
[00:38:38] People break promises all the time, but God don't.
[00:38:44] That's where your worth is, in Him.
[00:38:48] I'm for therapy, I'm for counseling, but I just saved you about 200 grand.
[00:38:55] I mean, still go.
[00:39:00] But you don't find your worth by thinking about what you do or don't do.
[00:39:05] Your worth has to come from someone greater than you.
[00:39:10] Well, death and the devil.
[00:39:15] Listen, we got some pretty in shape people here at Trans Made Church.
[00:39:19] Y'all be working it out, working it out.
[00:39:21] You still gonna die?
[00:39:23] So am I.
[00:39:26] Well, my mentor told me, Derwin, we're all gonna die.
[00:39:28] We just don't know where we are in the checkout line.
[00:39:33] We don't have to fear death because death has been defeated.
[00:39:35] That Goliath called death has been defeated, and the one who holds the keys to death has been defeated, the devil.
[00:39:42] Here's one of the ultimate Christmas scriptures, Hebrews 2, 14 and 15.
[00:39:47] Because God's children are human beings,
[00:39:50] Made of flesh and blood, the Son also became flesh and blood.
[00:39:54] What does this mean?
[00:39:54] Let's explain this.
[00:39:56] We believe that the eternal God of the universe, uncreated, has eternally existed as Father, Son, and Spirit.
[00:40:02] One divine being revealed in three persons.
[00:40:05] Not persons like you and me, but centers of consciousness.
[00:40:07] So think of a triangle.
[00:40:09] Three points, one triangle.
[00:40:10] The second point of the triangle, Jesus came to earth as a human being.
[00:40:14] He had to be 100% human being to take our place.
[00:40:17] He had to be 100% God to be the perfect
[00:40:20] One that takes our place.
[00:40:22] So he became a human.
[00:40:24] For only as a human being could he die.
[00:40:28] And only by dying could he break the power of the devil.
[00:40:34] In a world filled with violence, Jesus says, no, I win when violence is perpetrated against me.
[00:40:43] Some of you, your whole lives of, I gotta fight, I gotta fight, I gotta fight.
[00:40:47] No, no.
[00:40:48] When the battle knocks at your door, let Jesus answer it.
[00:40:51] He's undefeated.
[00:40:54] And He don't get tired after the third round.
[00:40:56] He gets up after the third day.
[00:40:58] His power is greater than us.
[00:40:59] He's stronger than us.
[00:41:03] The devil who had the power of death, only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.
[00:41:15] If you don't believe me that we have this fear of dying,
[00:41:19] I can tell you how to get rich overnight.
[00:41:21] Now you need to move to Utah because the laws there are lax.
[00:41:25] Start a multivitamin company, because you don't have to have certain laws, and just tell people it's going to make them young, market it, put some good-looking people on it, you will get rich.
[00:41:37] and then get some fancy face cream and do some photo editing and say, look, this man was once Caucasian, now he is Nigerian.
[00:41:45] Look at the power, because you know them Nigerians be ripped, man.
[00:41:49] I mean, like in the NFL world, NFL scouts are like, do you have any Nigerian blood?
[00:41:55] Where are you?
[00:41:55] We want you.
[00:41:57] I mean, they just come out and be like, see, our vitamin will do this.
[00:42:03] Some of y'all can be like,
[00:42:05] Just make sure you give 15% to TC, go for it.
[00:42:09] Hey guys, we don't have to fear death.
[00:42:12] And you know what else?
[00:42:12] You don't have to fear the devil.
[00:42:14] His power's been broken.
[00:42:16] For some of you, for too long, you have blamed stuff on the devil that's your fault.
[00:42:21] You know, people are like, ain't no weapon formed against me gonna prosper.
[00:42:25] Unless you're the weapon!
[00:42:26] Sometimes we be the weapon!
[00:42:30] Our pride, our ego, our selfishness, and God is going, no, no, I've broken that power.
[00:42:37] Live in freedom.
[00:42:42] The last giant, judgment.
[00:42:45] Judgment.
[00:42:48] In today's culture, it's like, well, no, God doesn't, no, God doesn't judge things.
[00:42:53] Question, why do you think you're more just than God?
[00:42:57] Like, say if somebody stole something from you, broke in your house, hurt someone you love, that's okay, just let it go.
[00:43:04] I mean, if you break in my house, I'm gonna forgive you, but I'm calling the police.
[00:43:11] And I hope they get to you before I do.
[00:43:16] I'm just talking.
[00:43:17] You know who y'all need to worry about?
[00:43:19] My other half.
[00:43:20] She is a Montana gangster.
[00:43:24] Y'all think I'm playing.
[00:43:25] I'm the teddy bear.
[00:43:30] God takes judgment seriously.
[00:43:32] That's why Jesus was judged on the cross.
[00:43:34] Jesus was judged for our sins on the cross.
[00:43:38] One day we're gonna stand before God and we're gonna say, God, I accepted your gift, or here's my life to avert your judgment.
[00:43:48] You don't want that, because your whole life you're gonna live with guilt and shame.
[00:43:52] Here's one of the verses that's helped me not only understand my future destiny,
[00:43:57] in the New Heavens and New Earth, but present peace today.
[00:44:01] So now, there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
[00:44:08] Okay, first of all, let's start at the back.
[00:44:09] Belong to Christ Jesus.
[00:44:14] Some of y'all are more excited about your love for eternity or sorority you belong to versus belonging to Jesus.
[00:44:22] One time I was asked, Earl, what are you doing for the ancestors?
[00:44:24] I mean, what, Jesus?
[00:44:27] That's the only ancestor that matters.
[00:44:29] Ain't nobody else saved me.
[00:44:30] My mama ain't saved me.
[00:44:31] My daddy ain't saved me.
[00:44:32] My grandmama was close to saving me.
[00:44:34] You know, grandmama almost close, but can't nobody save me but Jesus.
[00:44:37] Jesus is the ancestor.
[00:44:39] Jesus is my all in all.
[00:44:41] That's who you belong to.
[00:44:42] Does that excite you?
[00:44:43] Do you wake up thinking about belonging to Jesus?
[00:44:47] There is no condemnation.
[00:44:50] So this past week, I went out to the state of Utah, got to talk to my BYU crew.
[00:44:55] It was dope.
[00:44:56] But then I was a part of a meeting of 30...
[00:45:00] pastors and scholars with 30 leaders from another religious group and we were just talking about our differences and it was very cordial but one of their scholars said to me you know Derwin I look at your life and you know you've done this and you've done this and you've done this and I know when you approach God like he's gonna go you did this and you did this and and and you're into the kingdom and and and I just said you know well I respect your confidence in what you perceive that I've done
[00:45:30] But I have no confidence in what I've done.
[00:45:33] I said on Judgment Day that I think it's gonna kinda go like this.
[00:45:37] When I see God in all that he's worth, he's gonna look at me and say, Derwin, there's no condemnation.
[00:45:45] for you're in Christ Jesus and you belong to Him and all that belongs to Him belongs to me.
[00:45:50] That His righteousness belongs to you, His forgiveness belongs to you, His mercy, everything that He's done was Venmo to your account so therefore you can walk right in because you walk in with Him.
[00:46:03] You didn't do anything and He's done everything.
[00:46:06] And on the inside I was like,
[00:46:17] Question, how are you doing?
[00:46:23] Are you trying to grab your little five stones every day and throw whatever giant you're trying to hit with the stones?
[00:46:30] Or have you said, Jesus, Goliath is out there.
[00:46:34] I can't win, I'm terrified, but I trust you to take my place.
[00:46:40] This is what's gonna happen.
[00:46:43] I'm gonna pray for us.
[00:46:45] that we live from the life of Jesus.
[00:46:47] But then I'm gonna pray secondly for those of you who have not given your life to Christ.
[00:46:53] And then after that, we're gonna have our All Give Sunday.
[00:46:56] It's gonna be incredible at Lake Wylie here at Indian Land.
[00:46:59] It's gonna be epic.
[00:47:02] Our All Give Sunday.
[00:47:04] Why?
[00:47:05] Because Jesus gave his all for us.
[00:47:08] Will you pray with me?
[00:47:09] Let's pray.
[00:47:12] Father, we don't have enough stones
[00:47:15] and enough slingshot to defeat sin, death and judgment.
[00:47:21] We're so glad that you came down into the valley called earth.
[00:47:27] And you didn't grab five rocks, you told us, I am the rock.
[00:47:32] You didn't grab a slingshot, you grabbed a cross.
[00:47:36] And because of that cross, all those who look to you as champion are forgiven of sin,
[00:47:45] Living the victory over death and the devil and are free from judgment and condemnation.
[00:47:53] So Lord, may we walk in the life of the greater David, who is Jesus.
[00:48:00] And right now, I want to pray for those who are saying, hey, pastor,
[00:48:05] I have not given my life to Jesus.
[00:48:08] I have not trusted Him as my champion who defeats sin and death and the devil, who frees me from judgment.
[00:48:17] Today, I want to be reborn.
[00:48:19] I want to be forgiven.
[00:48:21] I want to be made new.
[00:48:22] I want to belong to Jesus.
[00:48:24] If that's you, the Bible is very clear.
[00:48:26] It says that in Romans 10, 9, that if you confess with your mouth,
[00:48:31] and believe in your heart that Jesus died and was raised on a third day you will be rescued from what sin death and the devil for what new life in Christ today friend that's you just say this in the silence of your heart to him Lord Jesus I confess and I believe in my heart

[00:49:23] Live from the life of Jesus the better David.
[00:49:26] Think about and re-listen to this message.
[00:49:28] Our action step is we're all going to participate in All Give Sunday.
[00:49:33] So at Lake Wylie, also here at Indian Land, if our ushers could come forward, we're going to pass the bucket as well.
[00:49:40] But let me give you some instructions.
[00:49:43] For those in the room at Lake Wylie and Indian Land, you can give using the QR code on the envelope or by placing cash check inside the envelope.
[00:49:55] For those watching online, all 10,000 of you, use the giving link provided in the chat.
[00:50:04] Our kids are going to be giving.
[00:50:06] Our teens are going to be giving.
[00:50:08] We want 100% participation.
[00:50:10] It's not the amount.
[00:50:12] It is our hearts.
[00:50:15] And why do we give?
[00:50:16] Because God gave us the greatest gift of all.
[00:50:20] Okay?
[00:50:21] Now keep this in mind.
[00:50:24] From this offering, we are praying and hoping that we're going to be able to have enough for two
[00:50:30] Translations for two tribes in Nigeria that don't have the Bible in their own language.
[00:50:37] And we're gonna start a multi-ethnic church planting network so there can be more churches that reflect God's heart.
[00:50:47] And we're raising money for a turn in lane.
[00:50:50] Can I get an amen?
[00:50:53] All right.
[00:50:54] Well, let me pray over us while we give.
[00:50:55] Our music team is going to come forward in Inyland and Lake Wylie.
[00:51:00] Let's pray.
[00:51:01] Fathers, we give.
[00:51:02] We don't give out of compulsion.
[00:51:04] We don't give out of being forced.
[00:51:05] We give out of love.
[00:51:06] We give generously.
[00:51:08] And we give with expectation that you're going to do a great work in us and through us so that more people would know you.
[00:51:16] We pray this in Christ's name.
[00:51:19] Amen.
[00:51:20] And after the worship song, someone will come back up and conclude the service.

[00:56:30] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]:
700 years before Jesus of Nazareth was born on planet earth a prophet by the name of Isaiah in Isaiah 7 14 says in his name will be Emmanuel which means God with us and then in Matthew chapter 1 verse 23 he says and he will be called Emmanuel God is with us I want you to marinate on that just for a moment
[00:57:00] You have a God who wants to be with you.
[00:57:05] And notice, Jesus didn't come when you fixed your life or I fixed my life or when I got it together.
[00:57:14] He doesn't love a future version of you.
[00:57:17] He loves the you that you are, where you are, to meet you where He are.
[00:57:21] He's Emmanuel.
[00:57:23] He is God with us.
[00:57:24] There is hope for all of us.
[00:57:26] Now, check this out.
[00:57:27] Check this out.
[00:57:29] What does all give?
[00:57:31] There are going to be people in countries who are going to read the New Testament for the first time in their own language.
[00:57:38] I don't know if you know this, but the fastest growing group of Christians in the world is in Nigeria.
[00:57:44] By 2050, one in three Christians on planet Earth will be in Nigeria.
[00:57:50] The faith is growing, and you're playing a part of it.
[00:57:56] We're gonna train up other pastors and leaders to create multi-ethnic churches because we believe it's God's heart you're playing a part of that.
[00:58:04] We're gonna have a nice new turn in.
[00:58:07] Praise God.
[00:58:08] But here's the deal though.
[00:58:11] At Transformation Church, we want hell to not have another person enter it.
[00:58:18] And we want more people to know the life-giving, transformative love of Jesus.
[00:58:24] We desire for the entire world, beginning with you, beginning with me, to know the greatness of our God, Emmanuel.
[00:58:33] That's why we do what we do.
[00:58:41] Almost did a little shindig right there.
[00:58:43] Almost Roger Rabbit on that thing right there.
[00:58:46] Hey guys, I love you and it is an honor to serve you.
[00:58:50] Can you welcome our campus hosts.
[00:58:58] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]:
Woo!
[00:58:59] All Give Sunday!
[00:59:00] Thank you so much, Pastor Derwin.
[00:59:02] Transformation Church, you're already standing, so let's get ready for our benediction.
[00:59:07] This is really just a good word or a blessing, but it's the way that we remind ourselves of who we are and who God has called us to be.
[00:59:14] And so we say upward because we love God completely.
[00:59:17] We say inward because in Him we can learn to love ourselves correctly.
[00:59:22] And we say outward because we love our neighbors compassionately.
[00:59:25] I point at you.
[00:59:26] You point back at me and we say, Transformers, roll out!
[00:59:29] Because this is just the... Total!
[00:59:32] And now it's time to go play the... Game!
[00:59:34] Alright, let's do it!
[00:59:35] One, two, three!
[00:59:37] Upward, inward, outward!
[00:59:40] Transformers, roll out!
[00:59:42] Have a great week!
