❓ What do these grades mean?
We do not issue this rating to attack the speaker, but to protect the listener. This church's overall teaching trend consistently deviates from sound doctrine. As per Romans 16:17, we identify these patterns so believers can guard their hearts.
🧐 Overview
Sermon Summary: This sermon encourages listeners to slow down amidst life's chaos to experience special 'moments' with God. Using the Transfiguration as a key example, the pastor warns against the tendency to rush past or try to 'improve' on what God is doing, urging instead a simple posture of thankfulness and presence.
Big Idea: God offers moments and presence to each of us. [00:20:28 ▶️ 📄]
Pastoral Analysis: The sermon is a thematically-driven, topical message centered on the therapeutic benefit of 'slowing down' to experience God's presence. While well-intentioned, it falls into the category of Pretextual preaching, using biblical narratives like the Transfiguration not for their theological substance but as illustrations for a pre-determined, anthropocentric theme. The message fails to expound on the Christological glory revealed in the text, focusing instead on the disciples' flawed reaction. This results in a sermon that offers a form of spiritual self-help rather than a robust, text-driven proclamation of the Gospel, reflecting a Laodicean tendency toward spiritual comfort over theological depth.
Biblical Parallel(Archetype): Laodicea — The sermon's focus on personal comfort, subjective experience ('having a moment'), and using God to achieve a less hurried life reflects a therapeutic, consumer-oriented faith rather than a focus on the Cross and holiness.
🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard
Overall Verdict: Theologically Weak
| Category | Status | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Soteriology | ⚠️ WEAK | The sermon is entirely focused on the believer's subjective experience. There is no mention of the Gospel, the cross, repentance, or faith as the means of reconciliation with God. Salvation is assumed, not proclaimed. |
| Bibliology | ⚠️ WEAK | Scripture is used as a sourcebook for illustrations to support a therapeutic theme ('slowing down'), rather than serving as the authoritative source from which the sermon's central proposition is derived. The text-to-talk ratio is extremely low. |
| Hermeneutic | ⚠️ WEAK | The hermeneutic is primarily anthropocentric and moralistic. It asks 'How can this story help me have a better experience?' instead of 'What does this text reveal about God's redemptive plan in Christ?' It misses the theological significance of the Transfiguration entirely. |
| Theology Proper | ⚠️ WEAK | God is presented as a personal, immanent being who provides peaceful 'moments' for our benefit. While not untrue, this portrayal lacks the crucial balance of His holiness, sovereignty, and transcendent glory, reducing Him to a dispenser of therapeutic experiences. |
| Sacramentology | ⚪ N/A | No sacraments (Communion or Baptism) were observed or discussed in the provided transcript. |

Matthew 17:1-9
[00:26:57 ▶️ 📄]
"After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, and he led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured or transformed before them, right in front of them. His face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. and just then appeared before them Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, Lord, Lord, it is so good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah. And while he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them and a voice from the cloud said, this is my son whom I love. With Him, I'm well pleased. Listen to Him. And when the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them and said, get up, don't be afraid. And when they looked up, they saw no one there except Jesus."
Key References: Numbers 12:1-15
Christological Connection: Moralistic: The Transfiguration is used as a negative example of Peter's failure to 'be in the moment,' rather than a positive revelation of Christ's divine glory and His fulfillment of the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah).
🧱 Sermon Outline
- Introduction & Prayer [00:13:52 ▶️ 📄] : The pastor welcomes the online audience on a snow day and introduces the idea that God disrupts our routines to get our attention and offer us His presence.
- Point 1: The Intimacy God Offers [00:17:33 ▶️ 📄] : Using Numbers 12, the pastor contrasts God speaking to prophets in visions with His speaking to Moses 'face to face' to illustrate the deep intimacy God desires with His people.
- Point 2: Slowing Down for 'God Moments' [00:22:14 ▶️ 📄] : The pastor argues that 'sin moments' are fast and emotional, while 'God moments' require slowing down. He encourages the listener to embrace this slowness to feel God's presence.
- Main Illustration: The Transfiguration [00:26:42 ▶️ 📄] : The pastor reads Matthew 17 and interprets Peter's desire to build shelters as a failure to simply be present in the moment, trying to 'improve' on what God was revealing.
- Conclusion & Final Prayer [00:32:04 ▶️ 📄] : The pastor applies the lesson by urging listeners to be thankful for the snow day as a God-given moment and prays for them to receive a fresh revelation of God's presence.
🗝️ Key Topics & Themes
- Presence of God [00:17:01 ▶️ 📄] : God offers moments and presence to each individual.
- Sin vs. God Moments [00:23:17 ▶️ 📄] : Sin moments are quick and emotional, while God moments are slow and intentional.
- God's Presence [00:26:36 ▶️ 📄] : The pastor discusses the importance of recognizing and appreciating God's presence.
✅ Commendations
Pastoral Tone | Warm and Relatable Communication
The pastor's tone is warm, engaging, and accessible. He effectively uses the shared experience of a snow day to build rapport with his audience and connect it to a spiritual theme.
Theology Proper | Affirmation of God's Personal Nature
The sermon correctly emphasizes that God is a person who desires an intimate relationship with His people, moving beyond a distant or merely conceptual understanding of God.
⚠️ Theological Concerns
🟠 Anthropocentric & Therapeutic Hermeneutic
Root Cause: Therapeutic Deism (Path C - Laodicea): This error reduces God to a cosmic therapist or life-coach whose primary role is to help individuals feel happy, peaceful, and successful.
"God will slow you down... What you need is a moment with God. What you need is the presence of God." [00:23:24 ▶️ 📄]
Correction: The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever (Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q.1), not merely to achieve a state of inner peace. Our focus is to be on Christ (Colossians 3:1-2), and in Him we find peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7), but peace is the result of being rightly related to God, not the goal itself.
🟠 Pretextual Preaching (The 'Secular Chassis')
Root Cause: Biblical Utilitarianism: This approach subordinates the Word of God to human wisdom or a pre-determined goal, using Scripture as a functional tool to achieve a desired outcome (e.g., motivation, peace, success) rather than proclaiming it as the authoritative, sufficient, and agenda-setting revelation of God.
"This is Matthew 17... this is an interesting story that people run right past." [00:26:44 ▶️ 📄]
Correction: All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). The preacher's task is to preach the Word (2 Timothy 4:2), which means proclaiming the meaning of the text in its context, not using the text to support an external idea.

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]:
Good morning everybody it is good to see you well i kind of i kind of see you you are probably at home because today is a snow day an inclement weather day a snow event something has happened and that's why i'm seeing you here you're seeing me there and you are probably at home on your couch in your pajamas and some socks that sounds amazing right now and i really hope
[00:14:18] that you are in a comfortable spot because God is up to something special today he's up to something special in you and in your family and I know it I know it I know it's true and I just want to pray for you and we'll get this thing started so God thank you so much for today thank you so much for every way that you visit us every way that you come to us God every way that you present
[00:14:43] Yourself to us, God, every way that You introduce Yourself and Your Holy Spirit to us, God.
[00:14:47] I pray that today You would speak to us, You would teach us, and that we would have eyes to see You and ears to hear You in everything that You're doing and in everything that we do, in Jesus' name.
[00:15:01] Amen.
[00:15:02] Amen.
[00:15:02] Well, it's really good to see you.
[00:15:05] I do hope that you're comfortable.
[00:15:06] I want you to buckle in for just a few minutes.
[00:15:09] It's not gonna be all day.
[00:15:11] It's not gonna be something that it's not.
[00:15:13] I just wanna share a word with you.
[00:15:14] I wanna share my heart with you.
[00:15:16] This week and so get comfortable get the coffee or the hot chocolate or whatever it is that you do for your your snow events and just find a good place to sit maybe grab a pen and a pencil and a sheet of paper something to take notes on because I do believe that no matter where you are no matter where you're sitting no matter what's happening in the day I believe that God has already spoken to you and
[00:15:40] and he's going to continue to speak to you and so maybe it won't be something that I say but maybe God would speak to you in this time and that you'd be able to jot it down and say God I remember I remember that thing that you spoke to me now and so we're going to just go on a quick journey together so let's let's get this thing started so today it's it's weird because yes it's an inclement weather day it's a snow day and so you don't get to decide
[00:16:07] you and i don't get to decide how and when and where god shows up in your life we don't get to decide that the only thing that you get to decide is how you show up we don't control what god's up to and what he's doing your job is to be ready for what he's up to and what he's doing and so no matter where you are and how you feel today and what's happening and all the chaos and there's a disruption to your routine
[00:16:34] You don't get to decide what God deems for today.
[00:16:38] You only get to decide how you show up and how you're ready.
[00:16:41] And so God presents to you and to me moments and presence.
[00:16:49] God presents Himself in these two ways over and over and over again.
[00:16:54] He wants to have a moment with you where He offers you His presence.
[00:17:01] Maybe you've been going through your life and you felt the presence of God and you didn't know that that was half of the invitation to have a moment with God.
[00:17:10] And so today, it's such a fitting example for a day like today where your routine is thrown off because you start to see, man, God is kind of out there sometimes.
[00:17:24] God just shows up how and when and where He wants.
[00:17:27] And so I need to be ready.
[00:17:29] for whatever moment God has for me.
[00:17:31] And so God offers you presence and moments.
[00:17:33] I wanna give you a glimpse into how serious God takes this.
[00:17:36] If you have a Bible with you, if you got your phone with you, if you just wanna follow along on the screen, let's look at Numbers chapter 12.
[00:17:44] This is a glimpse into what God offers each and every one of us.
[00:17:49] Now, this is a quick story.
[00:17:51] We're not gonna stay on this all day, but this is a quick snapshot of the character of God
[00:17:57] and the presence that he offers, the intimacy that he offers, the moments that he offers.
[00:18:02] Watch this.
[00:18:03] This is Numbers 12.
[00:18:04] Miriam and Aaron oppose Moses.
[00:18:07] Again, this is not what the whole day is about, but I want you to see this character trait of God.
[00:18:12] Miriam and Aaron, they had messed up really bad.
[00:18:15] They were talking about Moses.
[00:18:16] They were trying to decide, you know, does God only speak to Moses?
[00:18:19] And they're kind of undercutting his authority.
[00:18:21] And listen to this.
[00:18:25] It says, at once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.
[00:18:32] Okay, right off the bat, if God says that to me, I'm terrified.
[00:18:36] God says, come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.
[00:18:40] And so the three of them went out, and the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud.
[00:18:49] Again, this is already crazy, I'm terrified, okay?
[00:18:53] Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud.
[00:18:55] He stood at the entrance to the tent, and he summoned Aaron and Miriam.
[00:19:00] And when the two of them stepped forward, he said, Listen to my words.
[00:19:06] This is wild.
[00:19:07] He says, Listen very carefully to what I tell you.
[00:19:11] Listen to my words.
[00:19:12] When there's a prophet among you, I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions.
[00:19:20] When there's a prophet among you, when there's a prophet in this camp, when there's a prophet in your church or your nation, God says, I reveal myself to them in visions.
[00:19:30] I speak to them in dreams.
[00:19:34] But watch this part.
[00:19:36] This is not true of my servant Moses.
[00:19:42] What?
[00:19:43] This is not true of my servant Moses because he is faithful in all of my house.
[00:19:51] And with him, I speak face to face.
[00:19:56] With Moses, I speak face to face.
[00:20:00] I speak clearly and not in riddles.
[00:20:05] He sees the form of the Lord.
[00:20:10] Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?
[00:20:14] So he's going back against Aaron and Miriam and all you're supposed to get from this is a glimpse into
[00:20:24] The moment and the presence of God.
[00:20:28] Basically, he says, when there's a prophet among you, when there's someone with a gift in your life, we chase people with gifts all the time and we think, oh my gosh, they're so spiritual, it's so great and everything.
[00:20:38] But basically what God is saying here is that moments and presence, somebody who's been in the presence of God,
[00:20:47] It makes everything else inferior to the presence of God.
[00:20:52] Not a gifting, not a talent, nothing.
[00:20:55] You need the presence of God.
[00:20:58] He says even when somebody in your camp has a prophetic wisdom or a prophetic utterance or something like that, it is still secondary
[00:21:10] to someone like Moses who knows the very form of God, the nature of God.
[00:21:15] God takes this so seriously, and this is one of these moments where you see just how intimate God desires to be with you and with me and with all of us.
[00:21:26] And what's crazy is that sometimes you do have to shake up your routine and your schedule and your Sunday.
[00:21:31] You have to shake up all these things to feel that, to remember that, that God is not a human, but he is a person.
[00:21:42] God is not a human but he is a person and he wants to know you and he wants to speak to you it's a it's a strange glimpse a powerful glimpse into yeah the the the the displeasure of God in this moment with them but also just how close he offers himself to each and every one of us and so what God offers you today for you and I is moments and presence and how do you
[00:22:09] How do you recognize a moment like what God is trying to share with you?
[00:22:14] Well, the very best thing that you can do is slow down.
[00:22:22] Slow down.
[00:22:25] Even when God inserts Himself into your life, think about the paralyzed man on the mat, even when God heals him instantly,
[00:22:34] What happens next?
[00:22:36] He says, pick up your mat and walk home.
[00:22:41] Even when God does something immediate, even when God does something fast, and if he touches you today, you still have to walk home.
[00:22:53] You have to walk with him.
[00:22:54] Everything that Jesus taught
[00:22:59] He taught while he was with people and walking with people.
[00:23:04] Everything that the disciples learned, they learned from either sitting down and not going anywhere or walking.
[00:23:13] But we confuse these moments because
[00:23:17] We have sin in our lives and like a sin moment moves very quickly and God moments in your life move very slow.
[00:23:24] God will slow you down.
[00:23:26] It's not like this.
[00:23:27] Your sin moments in your life are very different from God moments in your life.
[00:23:32] A sin moment happens very fast.
[00:23:36] Sometimes you can get so caught up in the emotion and the thing that's triggering it and the thing that triggers you to do it and you sit there and you go, I don't even know how I got here.
[00:23:47] I didn't even remember making the decision.
[00:23:50] And God works the opposite way.
[00:23:54] God slows you down.
[00:23:56] Slow down.
[00:24:00] What you need is a moment with God.
[00:24:02] What you need is the presence of God.
[00:24:05] A sin moment is very emotional.
[00:24:07] It's very charged, quick.
[00:24:11] It's a quick burn, and God is like a sunrise.
[00:24:16] Even if you are the paralytic man today, even if you find yourself in that state of being,
[00:24:23] You're still gonna have to walk home after God heals you and think about, God, what are you doing?
[00:24:29] Why did you do that?
[00:24:29] Why did you heal me?
[00:24:30] What are your plans for me?
[00:24:32] And God has this by design to slow you down, to slow me down, and to have a moment with Him.
[00:24:41] That's what it's all about.
[00:24:42] That's what it's always been about.
[00:24:46] Jesus would heal people and walk with them.
[00:24:50] From the very beginning in the garden, God walked with him.
[00:24:54] God walked with Adam.
[00:24:58] God is not in a rush.
[00:25:01] And so the best way to feel the presence of God, the best way to have a God moment is to just let him slow you down.
[00:25:11] Slow down and see what God is doing in your life because
[00:25:16] The things that trigger you to do your sin moments and things that are just mistakes that you make.
[00:25:22] Just things that happen really fast.
[00:25:24] These really quick mess ups and all these things that happen.
[00:25:27] Slow down.
[00:25:31] God lives in a place in your heart.
[00:25:34] God lives underneath all of these decisions and the triggers and the cravings and the desires and all that stuff.
[00:25:43] Even good things.
[00:25:45] Even good things that you desire, even if you're just upset today that your Sunday got interrupted, even if you're upset that you won't be able to park in your favorite parking space, even if you're annoyed that you don't get to sit in your chair and you have to make do and maybe you're in the kitchen and people are being loud or something, even if you are upset about something that is technically good, God lives beneath your preferences.
[00:26:12] and beneath all your ideas and your sins and your nature, he lives at the core of you, at the base of you so that when he comes to light, he comes and he changes everything.
[00:26:22] God lives beneath all that stuff.
[00:26:24] God exists above and below all of those things at the same time.
[00:26:31] And he just wants to have a moment with you.
[00:26:36] He's offering you presence and moments
[00:26:42] I wanna read this to you.
[00:26:42] This is our main scripture for today.
[00:26:44] This is Matthew 17, one through nine.
[00:26:47] If you have a Bible, I want you to maybe take a piece of paper or something and just mark it down and save it because this is really, this is an interesting story that people run right past.
[00:26:56] Watch this.
[00:26:57] This is Matthew 17.
[00:26:59] We'll start with verse one.
[00:27:01] It says, the transfiguration.
[00:27:03] After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, and he led them up a high mountain by themselves.
[00:27:14] There he was transfigured or transformed before them, right in front of them.
[00:27:21] He's transfigured and he's transformed right in front of their eyes.
[00:27:26] They've never seen him like this before.
[00:27:28] They didn't know that this is what he actually was.
[00:27:30] They had their faith and their belief and they'd been following him, but they never actually saw him like this before.
[00:27:41] It's an amazing moment.
[00:27:43] There he was transformed before them.
[00:27:45] His face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light.
[00:27:53] and just then appeared before them Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus.
[00:27:59] Now to these guys, this is like, oh my gosh, this is the three greatest people who've ever lived.
[00:28:03] Oh my gosh, what's happening?
[00:28:08] Peter said to Jesus, Lord, Lord, it is so good for us to be here.
[00:28:13] If you wish, I will put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.
[00:28:20] In other words, Peter's going, God,
[00:28:23] This is incredible.
[00:28:24] What we should do is we should build three churches up here.
[00:28:27] One for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.
[00:28:29] And that way we can make this a holy place and people can come up here and visit and we can make a schedule and everybody can come and worship.
[00:28:39] Immediately, it's like the pattern in his mind goes straight into like fast mode.
[00:28:51] Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it's so good for us to be here.
[00:28:53] If you wish, I'll put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
[00:28:59] And while he was still speaking, while Peter is still blabbing, oh, oh my gosh, this would be so great.
[00:29:05] The three of you are my heroes.
[00:29:09] While Peter is still speaking, a bright cloud covered them and a voice from the cloud said, this is my son whom I love.
[00:29:20] With Him, I'm well pleased.
[00:29:24] Listen to Him.
[00:29:27] And when the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified.
[00:29:33] But Jesus came and touched them and said, get up, don't be afraid.
[00:29:38] And when they looked up, they saw no one there except Jesus.
[00:29:42] This story is hilarious to me because all Jesus was doing
[00:29:50] was trying to show them, the three guys that he was closest to, he was trying to show them a moment where he just wanted to reveal himself to him, to them.
[00:30:04] And the first thing that Peter does is he wants to improve on the Holy Spirit.
[00:30:08] He wants to improve on the moment and say, you know what would be really great is if we package this up and put it on a shelf and put it up for sale.
[00:30:21] He totally missed the moment.
[00:30:23] He missed the point.
[00:30:24] He missed God's presence.
[00:30:25] And this is what God says to me and to you today on this weather day, this snow day, this interruption to your normal life.
[00:30:33] When God reveals himself to you, slow down and watch.
[00:30:41] Just sit and watch.
[00:30:42] One of the saddest parts of the story is that Peter didn't even say thank you.
[00:30:49] He didn't even look at him and say, Jesus, thank you for showing me what you are and who you are.
[00:30:57] He completely, he missed the whole moment.
[00:31:03] He missed the presence of God, even your good intentions.
[00:31:08] Oh, we should do this, we should make another service out of this, we should build another church out of this, we should do this and that.
[00:31:17] A God moment works differently than a sin moment.
[00:31:20] God wants you to slow down.
[00:31:24] God wants to show you something.
[00:31:29] Your nature and my nature, your sin nature, it moves fast, as fast as you can, as fast as you go, as fast as you can get this done, as fast as, quick, quick, quick, quick, quick, quick fix, quick improvement, quick shot, quick everything, and God is saying, slow down.
[00:31:47] All I want to do is reveal myself to you.
[00:31:51] You don't need to improve on God.
[00:31:56] You don't need to improve the moment.
[00:31:57] Just be in it, accept it, appreciate it.
[00:32:01] Maybe say thank you.
[00:32:04] Thank God for the snow.
[00:32:06] Maybe God decided today was the day that your church would be in your backyard with your kids and the neighbors that so desperately need him.
[00:32:18] Maybe God decided that the people that he wanted you to minister to the most and the way that he would come to you today is in a snow angel.
[00:32:28] Don't run past the moment.
[00:32:35] Don't improve on it.
[00:32:36] Don't wish that you were somewhere else.
[00:32:39] Don't wish that you were someone else.
[00:32:42] Let God show himself to you.
[00:32:44] And when he does, when he takes you intimately to the top of the mountain, in your heart, or maybe for real, just sit there and say, thank you, God, for showing me.
[00:32:58] Thank you for offering me your presence.
[00:33:01] thank you for this moment god thank you for the snow thank you for my neighbors thank you for all the fun that we're going to have today thank you for the cookies in the kitchen god thank you for all the things when god shows up you don't get to say how he shows up and you don't get to improve on it you just accept it and you say thank you god thank you for trusting me thank you for showing me
[00:33:30] Thank you for introducing me to you, who you really are, how you really look.
[00:33:37] And so today, I wanna pray for you right where you are.
[00:33:39] I think maybe you're on your couch, and I imagine that you probably have friends or family maybe near you, or maybe you are, you know, just alone today, looking out the window and watching the beautiful weather.
[00:33:51] I wanna pray for you right where you are, and so,
[00:33:57] You can put up a hand right where you are.
[00:33:59] You can sit there.
[00:34:00] You can offer up something to the Lord even though nobody's watching, nobody's around.
[00:34:03] You could stand if you want to.
[00:34:05] You know I'm here standing with you.
[00:34:07] So I'll pray for you right now.
[00:34:08] God, I pray through the power of the Holy Spirit
[00:34:14] I pray on this day that is so different than all the other days of the year, God, I pray that you would work a miracle in somebody's life.
[00:34:22] God, I pray that you would just give a new and a fresh perspective, God, to somebody's day, to somebody's week, to somebody's hour, to somebody's minute.
[00:34:31] God, I pray that you would present yourself to them in a moment, that you would introduce your presence to them in a new and a powerful way.
[00:34:42] God, I pray that you would just show us who you are, who you really are, and I pray that when you do, that we wouldn't run past it, we wouldn't ignore it, we wouldn't even try to make it better.
[00:34:56] We would just be thankful and watch and say, God, thank you for showing me.
[00:35:01] Thank you for being who you are.
[00:35:03] Thank you.
[00:35:05] In Jesus' name.
[00:35:08] In Jesus name.
[00:35:09] And everybody at home said, Amen.
[00:35:12] Amen.
