❓ What do these grades mean?
🧐 Overview
Sermon Summary: This Christmas Eve sermon powerfully connects the vulnerability of the baby in the manger to the purpose of his life: to become a trustworthy Savior who would die on the cross. It explains that embracing this child means accepting him as Lord, which reshapes every part of one's life.
Big Idea: The birth of Jesus, a vulnerable baby, is significant because he grew up to be a trustworthy Lord and Savior who made himself killable to absorb the punishment for our sin, offering true life and hope, and demanding our lives in return. [00:39:23 ▶️ 📄]
Pastoral Analysis: The sermon is an exemplary piece of redemptive-historical exposition for a holiday service. It skillfully moves from the incarnation of Christ (the baby) to his atoning work (the cross), grounding the call to discipleship in the substitutionary death of the Savior. The use of personal anecdotes makes the demanding doctrine of Lordship accessible and relatable. The overall theological framework is robust, orthodox, and effectively communicated.
Biblical Parallel(Archetype): Philadelphia — The sermon is doctrinally sound, warmly affectionate, and Christ-centered, faithfully connecting the Incarnation to the Atonement and calling for submission to Christ's Lordship.
🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard
Overall Verdict: Biblically Sound
| Category | Status | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Soteriology | ✅ PASS | The sermon clearly articulates the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement, stating that Jesus 'absorbs the punishment that our sin deserved.' It correctly frames salvation as a gift received through faith in Christ's finished work, leading to a life of submission to His Lordship. |
| Bibliology | ✅ PASS | The sermon is grounded in the reading of Luke 2 and uses Scripture as the final authority. The concluding benediction quotes directly from Philippians 1:6, reinforcing the sufficiency and authority of the Word. |
| Hermeneutic | ✅ PASS | The hermeneutic is excellent, demonstrating a strong redemptive-historical trajectory. It avoids moralism and sentimentality by interpreting the birth of Christ in light of his ultimate purpose—the cross and resurrection—which is the central message of all Scripture. |
| Theology Proper | ✅ PASS | The sermon presents an orthodox view of God. It highlights His love in sending His Son, the Son's willing vulnerability in the incarnation ('God makes himself killable'), and the unity of purpose within the Godhead for the salvation of His people. |
| Sacramentology | ⚠️ WEAK | The table was rightly restricted to professing believers, which is a critical strength. However, the liturgy omitted the scriptural warning regarding the danger of partaking in an unworthy manner (1 Cor 11:27-29). This absence of a call to sober self-examination is a pastoral weakness, as it fails to fully convey the gravity of the sacrament. |
📖 How they Handle Scripture & Jesus
Primary Text: Luke 2:1-20 (Expository (Deep))
Scripture Saturation: Verses Read: 20 | Referenced: 0 | Alluded: 6
Passages Read Aloud:
Christological Connection: Redemptive Trajectory: The sermon explicitly connects the birth of Jesus (Luke 2) to his adult life, death, and resurrection, emphasizing that the vulnerability of the baby was a prelude to his 'killable' nature for atonement. The celebration of communion on Christmas Eve reinforces this connection, linking the beginning of Christ's earthly life to its redemptive culmination.
🧱 Sermon Outline
- Introduction: The Universal Experience of a Baby and God Becoming Accessible [00:39:32 ▶️ 📄] : Reflecting on the universal experience of babies and how unique it is that God became a vulnerable, huggable, lovable baby.
- Babies Take Control and Reshape Life [00:40:34 ▶️ 📄] : Discussing how babies, despite their malleability, quickly take over and rearrange one's life, time, and money, using personal anecdotes.
- Analogy: Christianity is Like a Baby Taking Control [00:42:56 ▶️ 📄] : Drawing a parallel between a baby taking over one's life and embracing Jesus, stating that it means 'it's not your life anymore' and will make you tired, but reshapes you into who you were made to be.
- The Baby Grows Up to Be a Trustworthy Savior and Lord [00:43:47 ▶️ 📄] : Emphasizing that the true significance of the baby Jesus lies in what he grew up to do: become a Savior and Lord who remains the 'boss' and rearranges life for our ultimate good.
- Jesus' Trustworthiness Proven by His Death [00:44:40 ▶️ 📄] : Explaining that Jesus offers no middle ground (crazy, dangerous, or God to be worshipped) and that his trustworthiness is proven by his willingness to make himself 'killable' to absorb the punishment for our sins.
- Communion as a Statement of Trust and Celebration [00:46:54 ▶️ 📄] : Concluding that communion on Christmas Eve celebrates the trustworthiness of the baby who grew up to be Savior and King, offering life, hope, and eternity, and is a statement of faith.
💧 Sacraments & Ordinances
"The scriptures tell us that when we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, symbolizing the meal that Jesus had with his friends the night he was crucified, excuse me, the night he was betrayed, that we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes again. To eat of this bread and to drink of this cup is a statement of faith. I acknowledge that the baby grew up to be my Lord and Savior. That is what's going on in communion."

✅ Commendations
Homiletics | Excellent Redemptive-Historical Connection
The sermon masterfully connects the manger to the cross. By explaining that communion is observed on Christmas Eve because 'the really important thing about the baby is...what he actually grows up and does,' the pastor prevents the Christmas story from being an isolated, sentimental event and roots it firmly in the grand narrative of redemption.
Theology | Clear Articulation of Penal Substitution
The statement at 00:46:08 ▶️ 📄, that Jesus 'absorbs the punishment that our sin deserved,' is a clear, concise, and biblically faithful declaration of the atonement. This clarity is vital and commendable, especially in a service with many visitors.
Application | Unflinching Call to Lordship
The sermon does not present a Savior without a demand for submission. The analogy of the baby taking over the household is powerfully applied to Christ's Lordship: 'it's not your life anymore.' This is a necessary and faithful call to true discipleship, moving beyond mere intellectual assent.
🧠 Questions for Reflection
Use these questions for personal study or small group discussion:
- The pastor said that Jesus doesn't give us the option of him being just a 'good teacher.' Based on what you heard, why must he be either Lord, a liar, or a lunatic?
- The sermon described a 'trustworthy' Savior as someone who would die for you. What does the claim that Jesus died to 'absorb the punishment' for sin mean to you personally?
- The pastor described becoming a Christian as 'it's not your life anymore.' What parts of your life would be most challenged if you were to submit everything to His leadership?

[00:32:41] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]:
Scripture reading for the evening is taken from the Gospel according to Luke chapter 2.
[00:32:44] In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered, and this was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria, and all went to be registered, each to his own hometown.
[00:33:01] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,
[00:33:09] because he was of the house and lineage of David to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
[00:33:18] And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.
[00:33:23] She gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn.
[00:33:33] And in the same region, there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night.
[00:33:39] And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone all around them, and they were sore afraid.
[00:33:48] And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring to you good news of a great joy that will be for all people.
[00:33:55] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
[00:34:01] This will be a sign for you.
[00:34:03] You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
[00:34:09] Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.
[00:34:21] And when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.
[00:34:32] And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.
[00:34:38] And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning the child.
[00:34:44] And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
[00:34:50] But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
[00:34:54] And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, for it was just as it had been told to them.
[00:35:02] That ends the reading of God's word for the evening.
[00:35:04] May God grant us the ability to understand, to hear, understand, and live in accordance with the word.
[00:35:39] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_03]:
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would someday walk on water?
[00:36:05] Mary, did you know
[00:36:08] Did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
[00:36:15] Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
[00:36:26] This child that you delivered will soon
[00:36:36] Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
[00:36:46] Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
[00:37:00] And your baby boy has walked where angels trod When you kissed your little baby Then you kissed the face of God
[00:37:32] The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
[00:37:50] The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the Lamb.
[00:38:04] Mary, did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
[00:38:15] Mary, did you know that your baby boy
[00:38:20] We'll one day rule the nations Did you know that your baby boy Was heaven's perfect lamb This sleeping child you're holding Is the great, the great I
[00:38:52] [SPEAKER UNKNOWN]:
Thank you for watching!
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]:
Thank you, ma'am.
[00:39:26] As we're preparing for communion, a few thoughts about what we're doing.
[00:39:32] One of the universal human experiences which we celebrate tonight is a baby, which is something we've all experienced.
[00:39:48] Some of those experiences, babies we don't remember, our own personal one usually.
[00:39:52] But we've been around the baby.
[00:39:53] We know the baby's a big deal.
[00:39:56] And so it is unique in the faith of Christianity that God became a baby and became accessible, became vulnerable, became huggable, became lovable in that sense.
[00:40:14] And we're transitioning from Christmas Eve and the birth of the child here in just a few minutes to communion.
[00:40:22] The act celebrates the great act of Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus Christ as an adult.
[00:40:30] We learn a little bit about Jesus from his life as a baby though.
[00:40:34] One of the things that are great about babies is that we can kind of shape them and look at them and have a plan for them where we can kind of turn them into almost anything we want them to be.
[00:40:45] It's one of the great things about a baby.
[00:40:46] They're pretty malleable.
[00:40:49] We have all these plans for them.
[00:40:51] We have all these visions for them.
[00:40:53] But what's interesting is even though they're just little babies, they just come take control.
[00:40:57] I don't know how recently you've been around a baby.
[00:41:01] We've got kind of a relatively new baby in our family.
[00:41:04] It's quite amazing.
[00:41:06] I don't know if you've noticed that even without the microphone that I'm pretty loud, I can be pretty loud.
[00:41:13] My daughter is pretty loud, too.
[00:41:15] We share the loud.
[00:41:17] So we were there visiting for our grandson Leo's birthday, and it was nap time.
[00:41:26] And I was told, you know, if you get too loud, you're going to have to leave the house and come back.
[00:41:35] They kind of take over.
[00:41:36] You rearrange the schedule.
[00:41:37] There's a new center of everything.
[00:41:40] It's not your money anymore.
[00:41:41] It's not your time anymore.
[00:41:44] And it wears you out.
[00:41:46] I remember the day that my wife called me.
[00:41:50] I was in my kitchen back in Virginia.
[00:41:52] Our son was about a year old.
[00:41:56] And I remember exactly where I was.
[00:41:59] On the landline.
[00:42:00] She called on the landline.
[00:42:03] She called on the landline.
[00:42:04] I went to the kitchen where the landline was and I picked it up.
[00:42:06] And she said, we had begun the process of trying to have a second child.
[00:42:12] And so she said, hey, how you doing?
[00:42:15] I'm good.
[00:42:15] How's today going?
[00:42:17] Watching young one-year-old.
[00:42:18] Good.
[00:42:19] She said, big pause.
[00:42:23] I'm pregnant.
[00:42:27] I said, okay.
[00:42:30] She said, how do you feel?
[00:42:31] I said, I feel a lot more tired than I felt five minutes ago.
[00:42:41] It's totally worth it, though.
[00:42:43] You're just tired.
[00:42:47] And it's not your life anymore.
[00:42:50] And it's not your time and money anymore in a certain way.
[00:42:56] And that's a little bit what Christianity is like, really.
[00:42:59] Here's what it means to get all juiced up about Jesus.
[00:43:03] This Lord and Savior came and it's not your life anymore.
[00:43:11] And at times it's going to make you tired.
[00:43:14] Being faithful, helping other people carry their burdens, doing it right, like anything else worth doing.
[00:43:22] Like anything else worth doing in your life, anything else that's important in your life, it comes and takes the center and it reshapes things.
[00:43:33] Now here's the good news of the gospel.
[00:43:38] This baby, if we're going to embrace this child, we fast forward in today's service to communion.
[00:43:47] Because here's the really interesting thing.
[00:43:48] There's all kinds of interesting things about baby, but for most of us, the most interesting thing about a baby is what does he grow up, she grow up to do?
[00:43:56] What does he or she grow up to be?
[00:43:57] So that's one of the reasons why we have communion on Christmas Eve, because the really important thing about the baby is not how we shape it or how he turns into who we want him to be.
[00:44:09] It's what he actually grows up and does.
[00:44:13] And he grows up into being a Savior and a Lord.
[00:44:16] He remains the boss.
[00:44:17] He remains rearranging of your life.
[00:44:20] And he is going to rearrange it into the life that we were really made to have, the people we were really created to be, the people we were saved to be, if we want to embrace this child.
[00:44:33] And he's going to make all these changes.
[00:44:36] And really one of the questions for this grown-up Jesus
[00:44:40] Is this grown-up Jesus trustworthy?
[00:44:45] If I'm going to let him, he comes in and says, to think I'm an okay guy, to think about, you know, the option that Jesus does not give us.
[00:44:55] When you read the New Testament and all these people who encounter Jesus, they have one of three reactions.
[00:45:01] They think he's kind of crazy, and they run away.
[00:45:06] They think he's dangerous, or they kill him, and they try to kill him.
[00:45:12] Or they think he's who he says he is, God, Lord, and they worship him.
[00:45:18] What is interesting is the option that Jesus does not give us is that he's interesting or that he's a good teacher or he makes me want to be a better woman or man.
[00:45:34] That is not really the option that Jesus gives us.
[00:45:39] So if we want to interact with this child,
[00:45:41] who grows up to be this amazing man.
[00:45:46] And he came as a baby and he makes himself accessible and likable and huggable and he makes himself vulnerable and he makes himself killable.
[00:45:59] The truly interesting thing about Christmas is that God makes himself killable.
[00:46:08] And he absorbs the punishment that our sin deserved.
[00:46:14] And so when he comes and makes all these demands, and we say, is this worth it?
[00:46:22] The piece of evidence that this is worth it, that this baby that grows up into this king, that are we going to follow?
[00:46:29] Is he trustworthy?
[00:46:34] We trust the people who would die for us.
[00:46:36] He loves you enough to die for you.
[00:46:39] He loves you enough to make you fit for the new kingdom.
[00:46:45] He is huggable and lovable and He became killable to absorb the punishment our sin deserves.
[00:46:54] That's why we have Communion on Christmas Eve.
[00:46:58] Because we want to really understand what this baby is all about.
[00:47:03] And what He's about is the life in this life that you always wanted and the hope for the future and eternity that you long for.
[00:47:12] was made real and our access to it possible through trusting in the life and death and resurrection of this baby who grew up and did it all for you, for me, for us, for anybody who wants it.
[00:47:33] It's a trustworthy little baby.
[00:47:37] And so we come to the communion table and to celebrate
[00:47:41] That trustworthiness.
[00:47:44] So here's how we're going to observe the communion.
[00:47:47] So some ushers will come, excuse me, some elders will come down and they will join me at the front of the church.
[00:47:53] And then we will say just a few more words and then they'll come down.
[00:48:00] And then we're just going to come in via rows.
[00:48:03] There'll be somebody to guide you.
[00:48:04] We're going to come forward.
[00:48:06] There'll be some bread and the juice in the cups.
[00:48:09] And then if you would, if you'd be so kind as to come back to the sides and then come back into your row.
[00:48:14] And that's how we do it, special on Christmas Eve.
[00:48:19] The scriptures tell us that when we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, symbolizing the meal that Jesus had with his friends the night he was crucified, excuse me, the night he was betrayed, that we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes again.
[00:48:36] To eat of this bread and to drink of this cup is a statement of faith.
[00:48:39] I acknowledge that the baby grew up to be my Lord and Savior.
[00:48:44] That is what's going on in communion.
[00:48:46] Everyone, there's people here, people here from all kinds of different places, different denominations, different church experiences, etc.
[00:48:54] Everybody in this room who confesses that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior in accordance with the Scriptures is welcome to eat of this bread and drink of this cup.
[00:49:03] Just understand that when you do that, when you come and eat and drink, you are making a statement of faith that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.
[00:49:12] So, let's pray together in preparation for communion.
[00:49:15] Almighty God,
[00:49:18] Thanks for sending your son as a human being, speaking to us in a language that we can understand and enable us now to take this supper in the right manner.
[00:49:32] We are people who need both a Savior and a Lord.
[00:49:36] We appreciate the work of Jesus Christ in making life and hope and eternity accessible to us.
[00:49:46] We pray humbly that you would set an assurance in our hearts of his good work and his promise to take care of us and keep us in this life and the next.
[00:50:00] Help us love and trust this baby who grew up to be our Savior and King.
[00:50:06] We humbly ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.
[00:50:08] Amen.
[00:50:10] If the elders would come forward, please.
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_04]:
The Lord is with you.
[00:51:30] One small land reaching out to the starlight.
[00:51:38] One small city of light.
[00:51:47] One King bringing His open riches.
[00:52:04] One King ruling an army of white.
[00:52:06] One King healing with incense and candlelight.
[00:52:12] One King bringing us light.
[00:52:17] God bless you.
[00:52:36] In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
[00:52:53] Amen.
[00:53:00] One small light from the city of night One small light from the stars in the endless night
[00:53:37] See the shepherds kneeling before him.
[00:54:04] See the kings on bended knee.
[00:54:04] See his father praising his mother.
[00:54:10] One small child on earth and a thousand One small dream in the people of light
[00:54:40] Once more then reaching out to the sunlight, once more Savior alive.
[00:54:58] God is Lord, Savior of all.
[00:58:01] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_07]:
The blood of Christ has been shed for you.
[00:58:03] It's the covenant of new salvation.
[00:58:04] The new covenant brings you to have an everlasting relationship with God Almighty and characterized by a moment of joy and hope and peace.
[00:59:20] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_02]:

[00:59:42] Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appeared and the soul felt it worth.
[01:00:01] A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on your knees

[01:01:24] Led by the light of faith serenely beaming With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
[01:01:54] Here came the wise men from Orient land.
[01:02:04] The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger.

[01:02:37] Behold your King before Him lowly bent Behold your King before Him lowly bent
[01:02:58] Before Him lowly bend.
[01:03:19] Truly he taught us to love one another.
[01:03:29] His law is love and his gospel is peace.
[01:03:42] Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother and in his name all oppression shall cease.

[01:04:55] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_04]:

[01:06:16] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]:
As we gather on this sacred Christmas Eve, we light all the candles, including the center candle, the Christ candle.
[01:06:23] Together these candles symbolize the light of the world coming to dispel the darkness.
