A Different Gospel: Evaluating a Works-Based System

The homily itself was a brief, moralistic exhortation to 'be kind,' failing to preach the substance of the Matthew 5 text, which is Christ's fulfillment of the law's demands on our behalf. The surrounding liturgy reveals a fundamentally flawed theological system, including a synergistic view of salvation (works-righteousness), an unbiblical view of scriptural authority (inclusion of the Apocrypha), a denial of Christ's finished work (the sacrifice of the Mass), and a violation of His sole mediatorship (prayers to saints).

🔍 Biblical Discernment: The 7 Church Parallels
The Faithful Parallels Smyrna • Philadelphia
Teaching that parallels the churches that endure suffering with true spiritual riches (Rev 2:9) and keep the Word of Christ without denial despite having "little strength" (Rev 3:8).
The Cold Orthodox Parallel Ephesus
Teaching that upholds doctrinal precision yet parallels the loss of the "first love"—the vital, motivating power of the Gospel (Rev 2:4).
The Formalist Parallels Sardis • Laodicea
Teaching that parallels churches relying on a reputation of being alive while being spiritually dead (Rev 3:1), or resting in lukewarm self-sufficiency, claiming to be "rich" while spiritually bankrupt (Rev 3:17).
The Compromised Parallels Pergamum • Thyatira
Teaching that parallels churches tolerating the "doctrine of Balaam" through cultural accommodation (Rev 2:14), or allowing seductive teachings that lead the flock into false gospels and immorality (Rev 2:20).
Why strictly "Mark & Avoid"?
We do not issue this rating to attack the speaker, but to protect the listener. This church's overall teaching trend consistently deviates from sound doctrine. As per Romans 16:17, we identify these patterns so believers can guard their hearts.

🧐 Overview

Sermon Summary: This service, while using biblical language of faith and love, ultimately presents a system of salvation that depends on human cooperation, ritual observance, and the church's mediation. It stands in stark contrast to the biblical gospel of salvation by God's grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, based on Scripture alone.

Big Idea: The gospel is a positive call to complete God's wishes, fulfilling the covenant and following the two commandments of loving God and neighbor. [00:23:49 ▶️ 📄]

Pastoral Analysis: The homily itself was a brief, moralistic exhortation to 'be kind,' failing to preach the substance of the Matthew 5 text, which is Christ's fulfillment of the law's demands on our behalf.

Biblical Parallel(Archetype): Thyatira — The sermon operates within a system that promotes a different gospel, seducing believers away from the sufficiency of Christ's finished work through the introduction of works, sacramental grace, and prayers to other mediators.

🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard

Overall Verdict: Fundamentally in Error

CategoryStatusReasoning
Soteriology ❌ FAIL The system presented is fundamentally synergistic and semi-Pelagian. A reading from the Apocrypha explicitly states, 'if you choose you can keep the commandments they will save you,' which is a direct contradiction of salvation by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Bibliology ❌ FAIL The service treats the Apocryphal book of Sirach as inspired Scripture, read with the same authority as the writings of Paul. This denies the sufficiency and closure of the 66-book canon and elevates church tradition to the level of Scripture, a violation of Sola Scriptura.
Hermeneutic ❌ FAIL The sermon on Matthew 5 is moralistic, reducing Jesus's radical intensification of the law to a simple call for 'kindness.' It misses the primary purpose of the text: to expose humanity's utter inability to meet God's standard, thereby driving us to Christ as our only hope for righteousness.
Theology Proper ⚠️ WEAK While formal Trinitarian language and orthodox creeds are recited, the functional theology diminishes God's sovereignty. The system portrays a God whose grace is offered but requires human cooperation and sacramental infusion to be effective, rather than a God who sovereignly regenerates and justifies the ungodly.
Sacramentology ❌ FAIL The communion liturgy presents the Eucharist as 'a pure sacrifice' offered to God, a re-presentation of Christ's death. This denies the 'once for all' finality of Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross (Hebrews 10:10-12). Furthermore, prayers are directed to Mary and the saints for intercession, violating the sole mediatorship of Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5).

✅ Commendations

Liturgical Orthodoxy | Affirmation of Historical Creeds

The service includes a public profession of faith that affirms the core tenets of the Trinity and the person and work of Christ (conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, crucified, died, and rose again). This recitation of historical truth is a positive element.

⚠️ Theological Concerns

🔴 Synergistic Salvation (Works-Righteousness)

Root Cause: Semi-Pelagianism / Synergism. (Reason: This doctrine violates the biblical teaching of Total Depravity, which states that fallen man is dead in sin and incapable of choosing or doing what is spiritually good. It assumes man is merely 'sick' and can cooperate with God to initiate salvation.)

"if you choose you can keep the commandments they will save you if you trust in God you too shall live" [00:09:58 ▶️ 📄]

Correction: Salvation is not achieved by our choice to keep commandments, but is a gift of God received by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. 'For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.' (Ephesians 2:8-9)

🔴 Denial of Sola Scriptura

Root Cause: Elevation of Tradition. (Reason: This error stems from a system that places church tradition and magisterial authority on par with Scripture, allowing it to define the canon and its meaning, rather than submitting the church and its tradition to the authority of Scripture alone.)

"a reading from the book of Sirach..." [00:09:58 ▶️ 📄]

Correction: The canon of Scripture is closed. The 66 books of the Old and New Testaments are the sole, inspired, and infallible rule for faith and life. 'The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience.' (Westminster Confession of Faith 1.1)

🔴 Denial of Christ's Finished Work (Sacrifice of the Mass)

Root Cause: Sacerdotalism. (Reason: This error creates a system where a special class of priests is required to mediate God's grace by re-presenting a sacrifice, which contradicts the biblical doctrine of the priesthood of all believers and the finished work of Christ, our great High Priest.)

"We offer you in thanksgiving This holy and living sacrifice Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself." [00:55:23 ▶️ 📄]

Correction: Christ's atonement was a singular, unrepeatable, and all-sufficient sacrifice. 'And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.' (Hebrews 10:11-12)

🔴 Violation of Christ's Sole Mediatorship

Root Cause: Syncretism / Veneration of Saints. (Reason: This practice introduces a pantheon of lesser mediators, obscuring the unique and all-sufficient role of Christ as our High Priest. It replaces direct access to God through Christ with a hierarchical system of intercession.)

"especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, with St. Therese and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help." [00:56:03 ▶️ 📄]

Correction: Jesus Christ is the one and only mediator and intercessor for believers. We are to pray to the Father, in the name of the Son, by the power of the Spirit. No other intercessor is necessary or permitted. 'Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.' (Romans 8:34)

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_10]
[00:16:33] the Lord be with you a reading of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Jesus said to

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]
[00:18:47] his disciples do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets I have come not to abolish but to fulfill amen I say to you until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter
[00:19:03] or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But
[00:19:22] whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
[00:19:39] For you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, you shall not kill, and whoever kills will be liable to the judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with brother will be liable to
[00:19:53] judgment, and whoever says to brother Raka will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says you fool, will be liable to the fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar.
[00:20:16] Go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while you are on the way to court. Otherwise, your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you'll be thrown into prison.
[00:20:36] Amen, I say to you. You'll be not released until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that was said, you shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that anyone who looks at a woman with lust
[00:20:50] has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have the
[00:21:03] whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into
[00:21:16] Gehenna. It is also said, whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, unless the marriage is unlawful, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it
[00:21:38] was said to your ancestors, do not take false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
[00:21:46] But I say to you, do not swear at all, not by heaven, for it is God's throne, nor by earth, for its footstool, nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king. But do not swear by
[00:22:01] your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. Anything more is from the evil one. My dear friends, the gospel of our Lord.
[00:22:16] Good afternoon. As probably many of you know, the audience of Matthews was the Jewish converts who were being lured back by the Pharisees to Judaism by telling them they were denying all that Moses taught. Jesus, in Matthew's gospel, is the new Moses and is telling them
[00:22:53] that they have a great entire covenant, but you're not going to lose the covenant, but it's going to be fulfilled.
[00:23:01] The word here in Greek is teleos.
[00:23:07] It's the same word that means perfect, fully complete, finished.
[00:23:12] Example, you download a recipe from the Internet for your dinner party, and you've wound up getting all the best ingredients, fresh as you can get them.
[00:23:22] You have the right timing and the right temperature, and it comes out totally perfect, better than you expected it, but complete, and all your guests marvel at your skill.
[00:23:35] That's the word teleos.
[00:23:38] The gospel is not a manifesto for the scrupulous, but a positive call to complete God's wishes, the two commandments.
[00:23:49] The Pharisees practiced the law, but in their heart, they did not follow the law.
[00:23:58] Jesus urged the people to show kindness to one another, even to the point of turning the other cheek.
[00:24:04] When someone treated them unkindly, they were to turn the other cheek.
[00:24:10] Warning those who treated others with hatred, Jesus says in today's gospel, You heard that it was said, whoever murders will be liable to the judgment.
[00:24:21] But I say to you, whoever hates his brother will be liable to the judgment.
[00:24:26] I dare say, unfortunately, that there are many people out there whose actions of hate are treading on very, very serious ground.
[00:24:35] They may get their 15 minutes of fame, but I worry about their eternity.
[00:24:40] You and I can say we can hate causes, we can hate movements, political platforms, planks, injustice, and even road construction.
[00:24:53] But we cannot ever hate a specific other human.
[00:24:59] Now Jesus lived this message by showing kindness to sinners, compassion to the sick, mercy to his enemies.
[00:25:08] remember, Father, forgive them. They know not what they do. You see, instead of hate, kindness blesses the person to whom we are kind, but also blesses you and me. It not only brings happiness to those
[00:25:27] involved, but it can work miracles in their life. It can bring completeness. It can and does work miracles to many as it spreads peace, hope, joy, like butter all around. Today's reading invites us three ways. One, to take a look at our own lives and to ask ourselves how much kindness
[00:25:52] is present in them. Two, to take a look at our own lives and ask ourselves how they compare to the life and the love of Jesus Christ our Lord. Three, to take a look at our own lives and ask
[00:26:10] ourselves what would happen if we took all that energy we now expend on anger and expend it on kindness. How would our lives and the lives of those around us change and become happier? What
[00:26:25] miracles might even result if we took Jesus' words seriously. I personally believe that even insurmountable health, social, and political problems would be fixed. And the final analysis, kindness is not a resource of just a single nation or a single person, no matter how small
[00:26:51] insignificant or how great they are. What and what more? Our supply of kindness is unlimited.
[00:27:00] The power behind kindness is the infinite, steadfast, and generous, and unconditional love of our Lord God. The more kindness we give of it, the more there is to give. So take away, destroy hate demand kindness be kind God bless you and now I have the privilege
[00:27:28] of introducing electronically our Bishop Bishop Michael Martin looking in the

[00:28:00] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]
[00:28:00] mirror can be a scary thing will we like what we see if I could do one thing to help change the world I would create a mirror where when we look in it we would
[00:28:11] see ourselves as God sees us imagine that if we could see ourselves as God does we would understand how beautiful and infinitely loved we are too often we judge ourselves harshly but God sees beyond our judgments to the person he
[00:28:29] created deep within and he loves us regardless sins and all if we could start our day with that assurance not only would our view of ourselves change for the better but our view of the world would change as well that is a future world worth
[00:28:48] envisioning what do we want our future to look like sure we would want there to be peace and we would want everyone to have food to eat and a roof over their head but beyond those generic
[00:29:01] dreams of a better world we don't spend too much time considering what we really want the world to look like maybe it's because we're too caught up in the day-to-day realities of our lives that we don't have time maybe we consider ourselves too small for the task and think
[00:29:21] that the future's vision should be left to those in charge or maybe we've just lost hope seeing our broken world and in despair we allow whatever will be to be what would our world be like today
[00:29:38] had the disciples of jesus taken any of those approaches 2 000 years ago for me the vision of the future is simple though not always easy i see a future in western north carolina where
[00:29:53] everyone so loves jesus we share him with others let me say that again everyone so loves jesus we share him with others. Imagine if all the nearly 600,000 Catholics in our region so loved Jesus that we shared him with others. Making this happen will take
[00:30:17] more than just imagining, it will take action. I see three simple action steps to make this vision real. These steps need to be taken repeatedly and flow from one to the other to not do so will slowly deflate the energy from each
[00:30:38] which is what we've seen in so many Catholics whom we know who didn't leave the church but have simply drifted away soon we will be sharing this vision across our diocese and inviting you to engage with it but for now allow me to
[00:30:56] briefly explain each of these steps that can make this vision real what do we mean when we say, form missionary disciples? Given that two-thirds of U.S. Catholics don't regularly practice their faith, we can assume that we need to rethink our formation and definition
[00:31:17] of disciple. We've done an okay job of making believers. Most Catholics believe in Jesus as the Savior. But the difference between being a believer and being a disciple is the difference between being a Carolina Panthers football fan and being a Carolina Panthers football player.
[00:31:40] Fans are nice. The world needs players. Disciples for mission is an even bigger step.
[00:31:49] When we think of missionaries, we think of people who are so in love with Jesus that they would go to remote places on the earth to spread his love. No need for us to travel.
[00:32:00] since there are already so many places in our daily lives that we have made remote by never bringing Jesus there. What do we mean when we say become the family of God? Family implies an
[00:32:16] intimate connection that is not determined by our choice, but rather by our birth. As children of God, we don't get to pick and choose our brothers and sisters in Christ. Rather, as we know from our
[00:32:31] own biological siblings, family is hard work, requiring forgiveness, love, and selfless giving.
[00:32:41] For us, our parish is primarily the place where we encounter the family of God, and yet too often we come to church looking to be served rather than to serve, as guests rather than hosts.
[00:32:57] more importantly the parish cannot be a place of serving God's family if our homes are not the first and most important place where we live as God's family imagine a world where the holiness of our family life is what we bring with us to share each week at church rather than the other
[00:33:20] way around. And lastly, what do we mean when we say, go out to proclaim the gospel? Imagine Jesus coming to earth to reveal to us our Father's love, but keeping it to himself. The good news that
[00:33:36] Jesus came to proclaim is that our Father loves us unconditionally and wants to save us from the death of sin. To be a disciple of Jesus and not go out to proclaim his message is like holding a
[00:33:52] winning lottery ticket but never cashing it in. The real joy of the gospel is not simply in hearing it, but also in sharing it. That is what Jesus came to do and what we're called to do as well.
[00:34:09] To so love Jesus that we share him with others is what we were created for and where our true joy is found.
[00:34:16] Find ways in your personal life, your family life, and in the life of your parish to form missionary disciples, to become the family of God, and to go out and proclaim the gospel.
[00:34:30] May the Holy Spirit guide us as we continue to envision a new heaven and a new earth with the Holy Spirit in western North Carolina, so loving Jesus that we share him with others.
[00:34:43] Know of my prayers for you as we entrust this vision to the first missionary disciple, Mary, mother of the church. May we follow her example of saying yes, and may God bless each

[00:34:56] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_04]
[00:34:56] of you with his peace. Thank Bishop Martin for his sharing his vision with all the parishes in the diocese today, and we'll certainly have time to put his words into practice in the future.
[00:35:20] One of the things that we have every year in the parishes throughout the land is the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults, those who have reached the age of reason, and it's one of the great joys of parish ministry. And I thank those who assist me. Deacon John has been in this
[00:35:40] field for many years. We had our first rite of welcome, the first liturgical rite in November, and some were unable to attend, and then we were going to do a make-up last month, and we had a couple of snow days as well. So I invite those candidates and catechumens
[00:35:57] who are here today, and if your sponsor is here with you, to come forth along the front of the altar step here, and we'll have this rite of welcome, which shows the steps that you are
[00:36:14] taking. Some will be receiving the full sacraments of initiation of baptism, Holy Eucharist, and confirmation. Some will be, who are already baptized, will be receiving Confirmation and Others Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. So the first question in this particular
[00:36:39] liturgical rite is just the name so we can be familiar with our brothers and sisters here today.
[00:36:47] What is your name? The candidates, yeah, come forward, yeah. Owen. And what do you ask of God's church? Faith. And what does faith offer you? What is your name? What do you ask of God's church?
[00:37:11] And what does faith offer you? What is your name? What do you ask of God's church?
[00:37:56] and what does faith offer you? What is your name? And what do you ask of God's church and what does faith offer you? God enlightens everyone who comes into the world and from the created world, He manifests His invisible attributes to each, that all may learn to
[00:38:20] give thanks to their Creator. To you, therefore, who have followed His light, behold now the way of the gospel lies open. In laying down solid foundations, may you acknowledge the living God who truly speaks to human beings walking in the light of Christ. May you put your trust
[00:38:45] in His wisdom, entrusting your life to Him day by day. May you come to believe in Him with your whole heart. This is a way of faith along which Christ will lead you in charity,
[00:39:02] that you may have eternal life with Him to guide you then.
[00:39:08] Are you ready to set out on this path today?
[00:39:15] And affirmation by the sponsors and also by our assembly today, the sponsors gathered here and the proxies, as you are presenting these candidates and catechumens, are you prepared to help them to find christ and to follow him to you most merciful father
[00:39:51] we give thanks for these your servants because they have already been searching for you who in diverse ways have gone ahead of them and knocked at their door and because they have answered your call today in our presence we all praise and bless you lord and now this
[00:40:13] part of the rite is the signing of the senses. And it's really a beautiful rite. So you can turn to your sponsor or to your proxy sponsor, and they'll just follow the sign at each step.
[00:40:35] Receive the sign of the cross on your forehead. Christ Himself strengthens you with the sign of his love. Receive the sign of the cross on your eyes that you may see the glory of God.
[00:40:57] Receive the sign of the cross on your ears that you may hear the voice of the Lord. Receive the sign of the cross on your lips that you may respond to the word of God. Receive the sign of
[00:41:13] the cross on your chest, that Christ may dwell in your heart by faith. Receive the sign of the cross on your shoulders, that you may bear the gentle yoke of Christ. Receive the sign of the
[00:41:30] cross on your hands, that Christ may be known by the work you do. Receive the sign of the cross on your feet, that you may walk in the way of Christ. I sign all of you in the name of the
[00:41:46] Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, that you may live forever and ever. Let us pray.
[00:41:58] Mercifully hear our prayers, we ask, O Lord, for these, your candidates and catechumens, whom we have signed with the cross of the Lord, and guard them with its power, so that treasuring what they have come to know of your glory, they may, by keeping your commandments,
[00:42:17] merit to attain the glory of rebirth through Christ our Lord.
[00:42:23] And we congratulate these for this step in their journey.
[00:42:27] We have a very active and a very energetic group this year, and we look forward to these continuing steps through the season of Lent and Holy Week and look forward to their celebration of sacraments
[00:42:50] at the Easter Vigil.
[00:42:52] because of the bishop's message and the rite of welcome.
[00:43:09] We'll just do our profession of faith through our baptismal promises.
[00:43:14] Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
[00:43:19] Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, rose from the dead, and sits at the right hand of God,
[00:43:35] the Father Almighty. I do. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? I do. This is our faith. This is the faith of the church. We are proud
[00:43:51] to profess it in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen. Let us pray for the needs of the church and the world.

[00:46:04] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_08]
[00:46:04] Our offertory hymn is number 728, I Has Not Seen, verses 1, 2, and 4, number 728.

[00:47:14] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_10]
[00:47:14] Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours

[00:49:52] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_04]
[00:49:52] may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

[00:49:57] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_07]
[00:49:57] May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.

[00:50:31] let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god
[00:50:49] through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race,
[00:51:07] a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for your own possession, to proclaim everywhere your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light.
