❓ What do these grades mean?
We do not issue this rating to attack the speaker, but to protect the listener. This ministry's overall teaching trend consistently deviates from sound doctrine. As per Romans 16:17, we identify these patterns so believers can guard their hearts.
🧐 Overview
Theological Verdict & Summary
Sermon Summary: Do you feel like a spiritual failure despite your best efforts? The secret to abundant fruitfulness isn't trying harder, but abiding deeper in Christ.
Pastoral Analysis: Pastor Harris delivers a passionate exhortation on John 15, effectively using agricultural imagery to explain the necessity of abiding in Christ for spiritual fruitfulness. The sermon is strong in its call to daily discipline and evangelistic focus. However, it is compromised by two significant theological errors: a synergistic approach to conversion that emphasizes human decision over divine grace, and a dualistic view of the believer's nature that suggests the 'old nature' remains permanently intact, leading to unnecessary spiritual anxiety.
Biblical Parallel (Archetype): Pergamum — The sermon blends orthodox truth with minor worldly philosophies, specifically by maintaining a dualistic anthropology that creates psychological tension and a synergistic soteriology that shifts the burden of salvation onto human decision rather than divine grace.
Big Idea: To be a fruitful Christian, one must abide in Jesus Christ, allowing the Heavenly Father to prune their life through His Word and suffering, resulting in the production of lasting spiritual fruit. [00:42:47 ▶️ 📄]
🎨 The Visual Metaphor
The stripped bark symbolizes the Father's pruning through suffering and the Word, removing dead weight to expose the life within. The heavy clusters of fruit demonstrate that true spiritual productivity flows only from remaining connected to the source of life.
📖 How they Handle Scripture & Jesus
- Primary Text: John 15:1-11, 16
- Usage Classification: Expository
- Text-to-Talk Ratio: High
- Pulpit Decorum: ⚠️ CAUTION - The pastor uses a slightly coarse remark directed at a male listener ('ask your wife, sir') which, while likely intended as humor, borders on unbecoming pulpit decorum.
✝️ Christological Focus: Direct Allegory

John 15:1-5, 7-11, 16
[00:37:51 ▶️ 📄]
"Jesus is speaking here he says I am the true vine and my father is the vine dresser every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away and every branch that bears fruit he prunes that it may bear more fruit you are already clean because of the word which I've spoken to you Abide in me and I in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine and you are the branches. He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for without me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, so you will be my disciples. As the Father loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I've spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. And drop down to verse 16. You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give you."

[00:50:29 ▶️ 📄]
"now let me sing to my well beloved a song of my beloved Regarding his vineyard. My well beloved has a vineyard on a very fruitful hill. He dug it up and cleared out its stones and planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst and also made a winepress in it. So he expected it to bring forth good grapes. But it brought forth what? Wild grapes."

🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard
Overall Verdict: Compromised / Weak
| Category | Status | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Gospel Presentation | ❌ FAIL | The Gospel Engine is compromised by a synergistic call to conversion ('ask him to come into your heart') and a dualistic anthropology that obscures the definitive break with the old life in Christ. |
| Soteriology | ⚠️ WEAK | The sermon promotes a decisionist model of salvation ('ask him to come into your heart') rather than monergistic regeneration, and fails to clearly distinguish between the positional truth of salvation and the practical reality of sanctification. |
| Bibliology | ✅ PASS | The sermon relies heavily on Scripture and encourages biblical literacy, though the hermeneutical application of the 'old nature' concept is flawed. |
| Hermeneutic | ⚠️ WEAK | The interpretation of 'abiding' and 'fruit' is somewhat narrow, focusing exclusively on evangelism and ignoring other fruits of the Spirit, and the dualistic reading of the 'old nature' lacks nuance. |
| Theology Proper | ✅ PASS | The view of God as the Pruner and Christ as the Vine is orthodox and biblically sound. |
| Sacramentology | ⚪ N/A | No specific sacramental theology was addressed in the sermon. |
| Confessional Depth | ❌ FAIL | The sermon lacks depth in explaining the 'already/not yet' tension of sanctification, opting for a simpler, dualistic framework that is easier to grasp but theologically imprecise. |
⚙️ The Gospel Engine (Confessional Distinctives)
✅ The Law And Wrath:
"If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned." [00:38:43 ▶️ 📄]
✅ Total Depravity And Inability:
"for without me you can do nothing." [00:38:36 ▶️ 📄]
✅ Active Obedience Of Christ:
"just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love." [00:39:19 ▶️ 📄]
✅ The Cross And Atonement:
"make the final surrender to die on the cross of Calvary." [00:40:42 ▶️ 📄]
✅ Commendations
Pastoral Sensitivity | Validating Spiritual Struggle
The pastor effectively validates the congregation's feelings of spiritual failure, creating a safe space for honest reflection before offering the biblical solution.
Illustrative Clarity | Agricultural Imagery
The use of personal gardening anecdotes and the 'parent/child' analogy makes the abstract concept of 'abiding' tangible and understandable for laypersons.
Evangelistic Focus | Clear Definition of Fruit
The pastor provides a clear, actionable definition of spiritual fruit as evangelistic results, giving the congregation a specific goal for their spiritual growth.
🛡️ Verified Orthodox Mechanics
✅ The necessity of abiding in Christ for spiritual fruitfulness.
✅ The Father's role in pruning believers through His Word and suffering.
✅ The permanence of salvation ('in Christ') versus the conditionality of fellowship ('abiding').
⚠️ Theological Concerns
🟠 The Error of Human Decisionism (Synergistic Salvation)
Root Cause: Arminianism / Decisionism
"To ask him to come into your heart this morning." [01:31:53 ▶️ 📄]
Correction: Salvation is by grace through faith, and this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are commanded to repent and believe, but the power to do so comes from God (Acts 11:18, Philippians 1:29).
🟠 The Error of Dualistic Anthropology (Psychological Schizophrenia)
Root Cause: Dualistic Anthropology / Wesleyan Perfectionism (Partial)
"When you came to Jesus Christ, you received a new nature. ... But now that old nature It's still there. It still bears the works of the flesh." [01:03:54 ▶️ 📄]
Correction: Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are to consider ourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:11).

[00:36:20] We will stop and give you praise for great is thy faithfulness.
[00:36:53] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_08]:
Well, amen and amen.
[00:36:56] This old preacher said, if that doesn't light your fire, your wood's wet.
[00:36:59] Amen?
[00:37:00] What a great, great song.
[00:37:02] I'll tell you, I remember the very first time I heard that song was actually at the funeral of Dr. Jerry Falwell, who was so used to the Lord.
[00:37:13] The first time I had heard the song, I'm sure it had been out prior to that, but the choir
[00:37:18] We'll turn in your Bibles, if you will, to the Gospel of John, chapter 15.
[00:37:36] John, chapter 15.
[00:37:40] As we come to God's Word today, we're going to read the first 11 verses.
[00:37:43] We'll drop down and pick up verse 16 as we get started.
[00:37:47] Would you stand in honor of the reading of the Word of God as we look at this together?
[00:37:51] John 15, beginning verse 1.
[00:37:55] Jesus is speaking here he says I am the true vine and my father is the vine dresser every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away and every branch that bears fruit he prunes that it may bear more fruit you are already clean because of the word which I've spoken to you
[00:38:17] Abide in me and I in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.
[00:38:30] I am the vine and you are the branches.
[00:38:36] He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for without me you can do nothing.
[00:38:43] If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
[00:38:53] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
[00:39:01] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, so you will be my disciples.
[00:39:12] As the Father loved me, I also have loved you.
[00:39:15] Abide in my love.
[00:39:19] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love.
[00:39:29] These things I've spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
[00:39:39] And drop down to verse 16.
[00:39:42] You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give you.
[00:40:01] Lord, I just pray in these next few moments that you would open our hearts and our minds, give us eyes to see, Lord, ears to hear,
[00:40:11] and a heart that is open and ready to receive exactly what you will share with us.
[00:40:18] And I just pray personally that you would let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight.
[00:40:24] In Jesus' name I pray.
[00:40:26] Amen.
[00:40:27] You may be seated.
[00:40:30] Now Jesus evidently spoke these words on the way from the upper room actually to the Garden of Gethsemane.
[00:40:38] The reason I say that is that the last words of chapter 14 indicate so.
[00:40:42] And so as they left the upper room and they're going along the way, Jesus gets ready to enter the garden and to make the final surrender to die on the cross of Calvary.
[00:40:56] now i find it interesting to note here that as we've been studying in our series through john's gospel you notice that in chapter 13 and 14 the lord jesus is talking in both of those chapters about what he's going to be doing for us while he has gone away into heaven you recall jesus told us that he is going to send a comforter and we talked about the comforter who would come
[00:41:23] He also provides us encouragement and strength for our hearts.
[00:41:29] But now, here in the 15th chapter, Jesus is going to begin to tell the disciples what they were to be or what we are to be and to do for Him while He has gone away to heaven.
[00:41:46] And by the way, I love the different aspects.
[00:41:51] There's three different aspects of our relationship to the Lord that we find right here in this chapter.
[00:41:57] One of them is there in verse 5.
[00:41:59] We're told that we are branches.
[00:42:02] Well, branches belong to the vine.
[00:42:05] Amen?
[00:42:06] We're also told in verse 15 that we are His friends.
[00:42:11] Wow!
[00:42:12] What a privilege to be a friend
[00:42:16] of Jesus.
[00:42:18] His words, not mine, but a friend of Jesus.
[00:42:22] And then down later in that chapter in verse 27, he says again that we are witnesses.
[00:42:30] We are holding the role of bearing witness to the Lord Jesus Christ.
[00:42:37] But there's no argument over the main thrust and the main theme
[00:42:43] of the 15th chapter of John is obvious.
[00:42:47] You know what it's called?
[00:42:49] Fruit-bearing.
[00:42:51] That's what the whole chapter's about.
[00:42:54] Fruit-bearing.
[00:42:56] It's the intention of our Lord Jesus that every church which calls itself a New Testament church is bearing fruit for Him.
[00:43:08] and we're also told in these verses that God intends for every individual that's you that's me God intends that every individual Christian that your life bears fruit for him now see that's where the rub comes isn't it we know that God intends for us to be useful and God intends for us to be fruitful
[00:43:39] And yet the testimony in so many lives is often we're not as fruitful as we ought to be.
[00:43:50] And though you may not stand up this morning and you may not necessarily verbalize it this morning, in your heart you may very well be saying right now, Preacher, that's me.
[00:44:05] That's my problem.
[00:44:07] I mean, I know that I'm supposed to be fruitful as a Christian, but more times than not, I feel like a failure.
[00:44:18] Then I feel like I'm being fruitful.
[00:44:21] I mean, Pastor, I know that I'm supposed to be useful to God.
[00:44:25] I know that I'm supposed to be, you know, used of Him in every way, but I feel too many times that I'm not useful.
[00:44:36] I'm not fruitful.
[00:44:40] Well, if you'll listen carefully with your ears this morning, and if you'll really open your heart this morning to what we see right here in John chapter 15, the words of Jesus speak and diagnose the reason that so many people who claim to be Christians feel like a failure.
[00:45:10] And in fact, he gives us the secret right here in those verses we just read of how to be an abundant, fruitful child of the living God.
[00:45:24] And that's what I want us to really focus on.
[00:45:26] There's three things I want you to notice with me this morning.
[00:45:29] And the first thing I want you to write down is I want you to notice what I consider to be a parable.
[00:45:36] A parable now Jesus doesn't tell a parable here but he explains the parable right here Jesus uses a parable right from nature you say what do you mean well did you know that all of nature is a parable about the things of God
[00:45:59] It's really true.
[00:46:00] I mean, when God created the universe, He made all of nature to be a parable about the things of God.
[00:46:09] In fact, the Bible says that the heavens declare the glory of God.
[00:46:16] Everywhere you look in God's creation, you will find a parable that is screaming out at you, I love you.
[00:46:26] I care about you.
[00:46:28] I have a plan for your life.
[00:46:30] All of nature in many ways as you just look at it begins to speak about that.
[00:46:37] and I imagine that Jesus with his disciples as they're leaving the upper room they're going to the Garden of Gethsemane they are walking along the side there and right before their eyes there's this parable that he begins to explain the meaning because there's this vine and on the end of that vine are a whole bunch of grapes the vines are just full of grapes
[00:47:08] And when Jesus sees it, he decides this is a moment that I've got to give them something that they'll have the rest of their lives.
[00:47:20] And he begins to explain it.
[00:47:24] A parable.
[00:47:25] And quite frankly, this parable from nature that he teaches is simply the picture of a grapevine.
[00:47:36] And if you look at it,
[00:47:37] You've got a vine, you've got branches, and then at the end of the branches you've got the fruit, the grapes.
[00:47:48] Now can you picture that in your mind this morning?
[00:47:50] Just right where you are.
[00:47:52] Picture on the side of the road, here's the grapevine and those parts.
[00:47:57] So we learn from this parable that Jesus is about to teach a few very important things.
[00:48:02] For one, we learn that the Savior is the vine, right?
[00:48:08] In this parable.
[00:48:09] The Savior is the vine.
[00:48:10] Look back at verse 1 of chapter 15.
[00:48:12] He states it clearly.
[00:48:15] I am what?
[00:48:18] The true vine.
[00:48:20] I am the true vine.
[00:48:22] Now I want you to underline that phrase and I'll tell you why.
[00:48:25] Because the vine was a very familiar thing in the national life of the nation of Israel.
[00:48:34] In fact, the vine became their national symbol.
[00:48:37] We have a national symbol of the eagle.
[00:48:40] Well Israel has the national symbol of the vine.
[00:48:44] Now I want you to hold your finger here in John chapter 15 and I want you to go back for just a moment to Psalm 80.
[00:48:51] Hold your finger here, turn back to Psalm 80 and I want you to look at what God's Word teaches us here in verse 8 through 10 of Psalm 80.
[00:49:04] In verse 8 of the 80th Psalm, here's what God's Word says.
[00:49:10] You have brought a vine out of Egypt.
[00:49:14] You have cast out the nations and planted it.
[00:49:19] You prepared room for it and caused it to take deep root and it filled the land.
[00:49:27] The hills were covered with its shadow and the mighty cedars
[00:49:34] So do you see in Psalm 80, God says, I went into Egypt and I brought you out.
[00:49:45] I transplanted you like a vine in the promised land.
[00:49:50] That's what Psalm 80 is saying.
[00:49:52] He's saying very clearly, I planted you and I put your roots deep.
[00:49:58] why because i take care of you now just now go from psalm 80 i want you to go to another place look over at isaiah the book of isaiah turn over a few books still in the old testament but they're in isaiah chapter 5 verse 1 and 2. look what he says in isaiah 5 verse 1 and 2. now let me sing to my well beloved a song of my beloved
[00:50:29] Regarding his vineyard.
[00:50:32] My well beloved has a vineyard on a very fruitful hill.
[00:50:38] He dug it up and cleared out its stones and planted it with the choicest vine.
[00:50:46] He built a tower in its midst and also made a winepress in it.
[00:50:53] So he expected it to bring forth good grapes.
[00:50:59] But it brought forth what?
[00:51:05] Wild grapes.
[00:51:10] See, in Isaiah 5, 1 and 2, you notice what happened to Israel as God's vine.
[00:51:18] You say, Preacher, exactly what is God saying here?
[00:51:21] God's saying, I've done everything a person can do.
[00:51:26] I planted them.
[00:51:28] I cared for them.
[00:51:30] I provided for them, but instead of bringing a fruitful vine, bringing forth luscious fruit, they brought forth wild grapes.
[00:51:46] Wild grapes.
[00:51:49] And we're not going to take the time, but I do want to ask you to jot down two more verses and you can check them out later today.
[00:51:56] If you go over to Jeremiah 2, 21, we are told God's noble vine became a strange vine.
[00:52:06] We're told in Hosea chapter 10 and verse 1, it is called an empty vine.
[00:52:14] You say, well, Pastor, what's the point?
[00:52:15] I mean, pointing out what was said about Israel in Psalm 80, and then what is said in Isaiah, what is said in Jeremiah, and what is pointed out in Hosea.
[00:52:25] I bring all of that to your attention because I want you to see that in the midst of all this national failure, knowing how Israel has failed, Jesus, in John 15,
[00:52:41] Look at his disciples in the eyeballs and says, I am the true vine.
[00:52:51] I am the genuine.
[00:52:54] I am the real thing.
[00:52:56] In other words, Jesus Christ, who came from heaven, planted on this earth to live among men, and yet at the very climax, at the zenith of his life,
[00:53:10] He is cut off.
[00:53:12] He is crucified on the cross of Calvary.
[00:53:17] And because of what He did on the cross of Calvary, He is indeed the vine.
[00:53:24] He is indeed the source of all life.
[00:53:29] And what Jesus is actually saying here is if you're going to really have a life
[00:53:37] You're going to find it in me, or you're not going to find it at all.
[00:53:44] This is one of those real line in the sand statements that oftentimes people miss.
[00:53:52] When Jesus says, I am the true vine, remember in chapter 14, he said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
[00:53:59] No man cometh unto the Father except through me.
[00:54:02] And now he's saying, I am the true vine.
[00:54:07] So that's kind of the first lesson in the parable is the vine, the Savior is the vine.
[00:54:19] But the second lesson I think we see here is that the believer is the branches.
[00:54:27] You say, what do you mean?
[00:54:28] Well, look down at verse 5.
[00:54:30] Look at verse 5 for just a minute and back in John 15 now.
[00:54:33] He says, I am the vine, you are the branches.
[00:54:40] Now, we're familiar with that truth as well, aren't we?
[00:54:44] We know that we've been cut out of that old tree of sin and we know that we have been grafted into the new tree of life in the Lord Jesus Christ.
[00:54:54] That's the reason we know as believers and true followers of Jesus Christ, when we came to Jesus as our personal Savior, the Bible teaches that you are placed in union with Jesus Christ.
[00:55:09] You are as close to Jesus as branches are
[00:55:14] to Avine.
[00:55:17] Keep that in mind.
[00:55:21] Believers are seen here in the branches.
[00:55:27] But then I want you to notice another lesson.
[00:55:32] Because when you think about not only a branch that they live
[00:55:39] because of the vine and the branch listen they have no other purpose but to bear fruit but then he gives us this incredible third lesson in this parable and it's that the father the heavenly father is the vine dresser right the heavenly father is the vine dresser
[00:56:10] Now I may be talking to some farmers this morning or maybe you don't know a whole lot about farming or agriculture.
[00:56:16] I'm learning more every week about agriculture since I'm serving on the Agriculture Committee and I'm learning more about farming as I'm spending more time with farmers day in and day out.
[00:56:26] But I will say this, while I don't know a whole lot about farming, I know that I was raised learning to grow a garden.
[00:56:36] I know that I was raised learning how to run a tiller.
[00:56:40] I know how to use a hoe.
[00:56:42] I know how to drive a tractor.
[00:56:44] I know those kind of things.
[00:56:45] But from reading on the subject, I have learned this about grapes.
[00:56:52] A grapevine is only going to be as productive as it can be if there is a vinedresser
[00:57:05] Who knows how to tend to that vine.
[00:57:11] There has to be someone who knows how to care for the vine.
[00:57:17] It has to be someone who understands the principles, now get this, of pruning and growth.
[00:57:27] You gotta have a vine dresser.
[00:57:30] A vine dresser who doesn't know what he's doing
[00:57:33] would do great damage to the vine, right?
[00:57:36] He has to know what to cut away and he has to know what to keep.
[00:57:41] He has to know when to cut.
[00:57:43] He has to know how to cut.
[00:57:45] He has to know at what angle at which he cuts.
[00:57:52] All of that's involved.
[00:57:56] And Jesus is now pulling from that parable
[00:58:02] and he is saying the parable in creation and he is saying ladies and gentlemen we have a vine dresser think about that we have someone who is working on our lives and shaping our lives to be what we ought to be
[00:58:32] He's saying that we have a vine dresser, someone who is pruning our lives, doing whatever's necessary to make our lives as fruitful as possible.
[00:58:47] And he's told us right here in verse 2,
[00:58:50] What he does about branches that don't bear fruit.
[00:58:54] Look at it in verse 2.
[00:58:56] Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away.
[00:59:04] Now, I want you to write in the margin of your Bible, I want you to circle that, but I want you to write in the margin of your Bible.
[00:59:11] That verb, more literally translated from the Greek, literally means lifts them up.
[00:59:22] That takes away there literally means lifts them up.
[00:59:26] It's the picture of a vine dresser that goes out and notices that some of the branches are too close to the ground.
[00:59:35] And you see, if the branches are dragging the ground, they're not gonna be as fruitful.
[00:59:42] Branches are more fruitful when they're lifted up toward the sun.
[00:59:50] You see, the reason that a lot of us
[00:59:53] As believers are not as fruitful as we should be, the reason that a lot of us are not as fruitful as we could be is because we're too tied to the ground.
[01:00:04] Hello?
[01:00:06] We're too tied to this earth.
[01:00:09] We're too tied to this life.
[01:00:12] We're too tied like earth dwellers.
[01:00:16] And you'll never be as fruitful as you could possibly be until you have turned your life heavenward.
[01:00:25] Until you've turned your eyes toward the Son of God.
[01:00:28] Until you've got your life facing the Son of God.
[01:00:34] See, that's why we've got to begin every day letting God lift us toward the things that are above.
[01:00:49] Let me just tell you something this morning, ma'am.
[01:00:51] Let me tell you something, sir.
[01:00:52] God has a way of lifting us closer to himself.
[01:00:58] In fact, the Bible says, draw near to God and he will what?
[01:01:03] Draw near to you.
[01:01:05] You know what that means?
[01:01:07] I'll tell you what that means.
[01:01:09] You are just as close to Jesus this morning as you want to be.
[01:01:20] Did you hear that?
[01:01:23] You are just as close to Jesus as you want to be.
[01:01:29] I saw a plaque one time.
[01:01:31] I said, if you don't feel as close to God as you used to, who moved?
[01:01:39] Hello?
[01:01:41] Who moved?
[01:01:44] People say all the time, I don't feel as close to God.
[01:01:49] Yeah.
[01:01:51] Who moved?
[01:01:53] Oh, listen.
[01:01:58] He talks about
[01:02:01] Those that are not bearing fruit, he lifts them up to get them closer.
[01:02:07] And what about the vine dresser?
[01:02:11] What does he do to those who are bearing fruit?
[01:02:15] Because you may be here this morning and you may say, preacher, I've got some fruit in my life.
[01:02:20] I'm living the Christian life.
[01:02:21] I'm making some progress.
[01:02:23] I'm winning a few people to Jesus.
[01:02:25] There's a definite difference in my life as a believer today than there was in my life two years ago.
[01:02:33] I see some of it.
[01:02:34] Well, look in the middle of verse two, if you will.
[01:02:37] Where he says, not only every branch of me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that bears fruit, what does it say he does?
[01:02:48] He prunes that it may bear more fruit.
[01:02:53] Every branch in me that bears fruit, Jesus says he prunes that it may bear more fruit.
[01:03:02] In other words, he cuts it back.
[01:03:06] And don't miss the word picture that Jesus is drawing here.
[01:03:10] Here's the Heavenly Father.
[01:03:11] You're growing in the Lord.
[01:03:13] You're bearing a little fruit for the Lord.
[01:03:15] And the Lord says, okay, I'm gonna prune you back just a little.
[01:03:20] I'm going to cut you back just a little.
[01:03:26] So stay with me here.
[01:03:29] When you came to Jesus Christ, sir, you received a new nature, amen?
[01:03:37] Okay, some of you didn't understand that question.
[01:03:40] When you came to Jesus Christ, you received a new nature.
[01:03:51] Amen?
[01:03:54] You received a divine nature in the person of the Holy Spirit coming to live in your heart.
[01:04:03] But now that old nature
[01:04:05] It's still there.
[01:04:07] It still bears the works of the flesh.
[01:04:11] If you may say, Preacher, I don't believe that.
[01:04:12] I think my old nature has been eradicated.
[01:04:15] If you think that, just ask your wife, sir.
[01:04:20] She'll clear that up for you real quick.
[01:04:24] Ask your spouse.
[01:04:27] The Heavenly Father is the master pruner.
[01:04:33] and He knows just how to cut away those obnoxious weeds of the old life so that our new life in Jesus Christ is able to bear more and more fruit for the glory of God.
[01:04:47] The obvious question then is, how does He do it?
[01:04:50] Mark, how does the Heavenly Father prune me?
[01:04:53] How does He prune my life?
[01:04:56] Look at verse 3.
[01:05:00] He said, You're already clean
[01:05:02] Because of the Word which I have spoken to you.
[01:05:08] And by the way, verse 3 ought to be underlined because that's the best way for him to do it.
[01:05:14] Every day coming before the Lord with a portion of His Word during a quiet time speaking to your heart is the best way to do it.
[01:05:24] Now I realize as a new believer when you start spending some time with God each day and you read a portion of His Word each day it might be a little painful especially at the beginning because if you do it right and you really open up your heart and you open up your life to let God's Word speak to you deep down it can hurt when that branch gets cut
[01:05:53] I mean listen you've got that old pride in your life and when God starts pruning using verses of scripture like God resisted the proud ouch that hurts God gives grace to the humble ouch I know I haven't been very humble lately that sin of gossip
[01:06:22] You start reading in James chapter 3 that your tongue is unruly evil?
[01:06:29] That it's full of deadly poison?
[01:06:33] [SPEAKER UNKNOWN]:
Ouch!
[01:06:36] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_08]:
Let me tell you something about your life this morning.
[01:06:39] Maybe you didn't want to hear.
[01:06:42] But all that undergrowth of the old habits of our lives
[01:06:50] all that undergrowth is there give the pruner time he'll cut it out give the pruner time if you're a real believer he's gonna cut that underbrush of those old habits out of your life
[01:07:16] I remember that old you've heard me quote it before the old song by the hemp hills he's still working on me to make me what I ought to be took him just a week to make the moon and the stars the sun and the earth and jupiter and mars how loving and gracious he must be because he's still working on me what's that work he's doing on you
[01:07:42] He's cutting out the underbrush.
[01:07:45] He's cutting out that undergrowth of selfishness, of sin, of that old self.
[01:07:56] If you're truly saved, you may not be what you ought to be, but praise God, you're not what you used to be.
[01:08:07] And when the Word of God's working on you, you're just, listen,
[01:08:13] you're not gonna be down on the ground he uses his word to prune but he also uses suffering to prune I want to show you a quick verse over in Hebrews chapter 12 look at it in Hebrews chapter 12 verse 11 he tells us now no chastening
[01:08:41] Seems to be joyful for the present.
[01:08:43] Oh boy.
[01:08:45] No chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful.
[01:08:52] Nevertheless, afterward, it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
[01:09:06] Isn't that something?
[01:09:09] You find another pruning knife in Hebrews 12.
[01:09:13] It's not quite as pleasant as just reading the Word of God and letting Him use that to work in you.
[01:09:20] He's simply saying it's not pleasant when we go through hard times, but the Father even uses your difficult times like a pruning agent to make you more fruitful than you've ever been in your life.
[01:09:38] None of us welcome those difficult times, but yet God's still using them.
[01:09:44] See, that's the parable.
[01:09:47] But then real quickly, I want you to see this, and it's the principle.
[01:09:52] The principle.
[01:09:54] And I call it the principle because there's a key here, there's one statement here that Jesus gave his disciples to show us how we can really have the fruitfulness in Christ.
[01:10:07] And probably it's something that you've read it before, you saw it, you may have even seen it just a moment ago in verse four, and it's three little words, but boy do they pack a punch.
[01:10:21] Abide in me.
[01:10:26] Underline that.
[01:10:28] Circle it in your Bible.
[01:10:29] Put stars by it.
[01:10:31] Because if you'll look down through the 11 verses again and again, you find Jesus saying it, Abide in me.
[01:10:39] He said that in verse 4.
[01:10:41] When you look at verse 5, he says, Abide in me.
[01:10:46] You look down at verse 7, he says, Abide in me.
[01:10:51] You look down at verse 9, he says, Abide in me.
[01:10:55] My love you look at verse 10 and he says abide in my love and he says in verse 11 that my joy may remain that's saying the same thing to abide in to remain in ladies and gentlemen that is the secret that is the key principle that is the heart of the matter that is the key piece of the puzzle
[01:11:24] Abide in Jesus.
[01:11:32] And see, it's really important that you understand the difference between being in Christ and abiding in Christ.
[01:11:44] Because there's a huge difference.
[01:11:46] Write this down.
[01:11:47] Write this down.
[01:11:49] Write, in Jesus...
[01:11:53] equals salvation.
[01:11:58] Then write this down.
[01:12:00] Abide in Jesus equals fellowship.
[01:12:08] Now if you'll write that down and just look at it with your own eyes, you'll see the difference between the two.
[01:12:16] The moment that you got saved, the moment you repented of your sin, placed your faith in Jesus Christ, surrendered your life to Him, at the moment that you got saved, you became in Christ.
[01:12:27] You are in union with Jesus.
[01:12:30] It's one of Paul's favorite terms he uses in all of his letters, in Christ.
[01:12:36] Because Paul knew it's awesome to be saved.
[01:12:38] It's awesome to be in Christ.
[01:12:41] It's awesome to know I'm going to heaven when I die.
[01:12:44] Nothing can change that.
[01:12:46] You can never be severed from Jesus Christ.
[01:12:50] Your salvation is permanent.
[01:12:53] You are in Christ Jesus.
[01:13:00] But abiding in Christ
[01:13:07] It's not about your salvation, sir.
[01:13:10] It's about your fellowship with Jesus.
[01:13:15] And by the way, it is a command here.
[01:13:19] It is commanded for you to abide in Christ.
[01:13:23] That word abide is a word that had to do with home.
[01:13:26] It had to do with a dwelling.
[01:13:28] And what Jesus is basically saying here is make your home in me.
[01:13:34] He's saying dwell in me.
[01:13:36] He's saying keep in contact with me.
[01:13:40] He's saying stay in touch with me.
[01:13:43] He's saying be constantly in my presence.
[01:13:46] He is saying cultivate daily contact with me.
[01:13:52] Ladies and gentlemen, that's how you stay fruitful.
[01:13:55] That's how you become fruitful is by continually abiding in Jesus.
[01:14:03] And if you abide with Jesus, he says in the middle of verse 5, what?
[01:14:09] He'll abide with you.
[01:14:10] Isn't that what verse 5 says?
[01:14:14] Pretty clearly.
[01:14:16] He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit.
[01:14:28] Ladies and gentlemen, get what that's saying.
[01:14:33] You can't lose your salvation, but you can sure lose your fellowship.
[01:14:46] You can't lose your salvation, but you can lose your fellowship.
[01:14:55] A great example of that is your children, if you're looking for an example.
[01:15:00] You got a son, you got a daughter.
[01:15:03] Your blood runs through their veins.
[01:15:07] Nothing can ever change the fact that they're yours.
[01:15:12] You can try to disown them, you can try to say they're not mine, not gonna happen.
[01:15:16] Your blood runs through them.
[01:15:18] You got a son, you got a daughter, they're your children and nothing can ever change that.
[01:15:25] But a lot of things can affect whether or not you're in fellowship with them, you know?
[01:15:33] You understand?
[01:15:33] A lot of things affect the fellowship.
[01:15:41] It's that same way with Jesus.
[01:15:44] You belong to Him.
[01:15:47] But the question is, are you abiding in Him?
[01:15:51] If we abide, He says there's a fullness of life.
[01:15:55] If we don't abide, there's going to be failure.
[01:15:57] That's what he's saying at the end of verse 5 when he said, For without me, you can do nothing.
[01:16:05] We can't do anything without Jesus.
[01:16:08] How many of you in this room could raise your hand and say, Pastor, I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
[01:16:14] I've tried to do stuff without Jesus, and it doesn't work.
[01:16:17] Raise your hand if you've ever experienced that.
[01:16:19] Sure.
[01:16:19] All over this sanctuary, hands go up.
[01:16:26] And for those of you that aren't wise enough to understand when you've done it, I pray that God speaks to your heart today and convicts you.
[01:16:34] Because Jesus says you can't do anything without me.
[01:16:39] Now I realize you're probably wondering about verse 6.
[01:16:42] Because a lot of people get tripped up here.
[01:16:45] If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out.
[01:16:50] as a branch and is withered and you probably read that and you said Mark does that mean that if you don't bear fruit then you're gonna you're lost and you're going to hell well it's very important to always keep in mind when you come to a passage like this the context is this a salvation passage or is this a fellowship passage
[01:17:15] We've already seen it's not a salvation passage.
[01:17:18] He's not talking about being in Christ.
[01:17:21] He's not talking about losing your salvation.
[01:17:25] Excuse me.
[01:17:27] He's saying after the Lord has lifted you up, after the Lord has pruned you and done away with everything that He could do away with at that moment, and you yourself refuse to abide in Him,
[01:17:45] Then you are unfruitful.
[01:17:48] Then you are set upon the shelf.
[01:17:52] You're of no more use.
[01:17:55] You're still mine, but you're of no more use.
[01:18:04] Friend, when we don't abide in Jesus
[01:18:07] When we don't stay close to Jesus, when we don't let God continue working in our lives, just like those branches that are unproductive, they are cut off and they are thrown over there on the heap.
[01:18:21] They are set on the shelf.
[01:18:24] And that's what God does in our lives as believers.
[01:18:30] My point is, you've got to daily stay in touch with Jesus.
[01:18:37] That's the reason the statement is so powerful and so prudent.
[01:18:41] Abide in me!
[01:18:44] And the last thing I'll ask you to see, and I'm done, is the product.
[01:18:52] Because if you go back and you look at verse 2, he says that every branch that bears fruit
[01:19:01] Then he goes further and at the end of verse 2 he even says that it bears more fruit.
[01:19:09] When you drop down and look at verse 5 he actually goes further and talks about much fruit.
[01:19:16] And then when you go down to verse 16 he goes even further and he talks about fruit that remains.
[01:19:22] I want you to notice the progression of that.
[01:19:25] Producing fruit, producing more fruit,
[01:19:31] Producing much fruit and then producing fruit that remains.
[01:19:41] You see the progression?
[01:19:45] What does God expect of us?
[01:19:49] He expects fruit.
[01:19:52] He expects more fruit.
[01:19:55] He expects much fruit.
[01:19:59] and ultimately he expects fruit that remains.
[01:20:04] Man, there's so much we could talk about this morning if we had time.
[01:20:07] We could talk about Galatians 5 and we could talk about the fruit of character.
[01:20:12] We could talk about Philippians 1.11 and the fruit of daily conduct.
[01:20:17] We could talk about Philippians 4 and the fruit of contribution.
[01:20:21] But we don't have time to do all of that.
[01:20:24] And I'm telling you that the ultimate fruit
[01:20:28] In this passage today is simply this.
[01:20:32] If you've got an apple tree, what kind of fruit do you expect to get from that apple tree?
[01:20:41] And if you have a pear tree, what kind of fruit do you expect to be produced from that pear tree?
[01:20:49] And if you have a Christian tree, what kind of fruit
[01:20:57] would come forth from that Christian tree.
[01:21:03] More believers, more Christians.
[01:21:08] The kind of fruit that you get from a Christian is another Christian, is another believer, is another follower of Christ, another person one to faith in Jesus Christ.
[01:21:27] What I'm saying is if you and I just simply live the normal, biblically, the normal Christian natural life, the result would be other people coming to Christ as a result
[01:21:53] of what's being produced from our lives.
[01:21:59] And that's fruit that remains.
[01:22:04] That's fruit that remains.
[01:22:08] Let me ask you something this morning.
[01:22:09] There's a lot in that passage.
[01:22:12] But here's my question for you as we close.
[01:22:19] You ready for this?
[01:22:20] You're not going to like it.
[01:22:23] But are you ready?
[01:22:28] What's the vine dresser pruning out of your life this morning?
[01:22:40] For many of you in this room and many of you listening to me by live stream or listening by delayed broadcast, that's the question I have to ask you.
[01:22:51] What is the vinedresser pruning out of your life this morning?
[01:23:04] Another question.
[01:23:07] How are you abiding in Jesus?
[01:23:13] How are you staying close to Him?
[01:23:18] I have to ask.
[01:23:27] And then when was the last time that another believer, another follower of Christ was produced from your witness in your life?
[01:23:50] Those are really the questions of the hour when you get down to it.
[01:23:57] Fruit-bearing is what John 15 is all about.
[01:24:04] Fruit-bearing.
[01:24:08] I hope you'll let the Holy Spirit answer all three of those questions for you right now.
[01:24:18] Would you bow your heads where you are?
[01:24:20] Heads are bowed, eyes are closed.
[01:24:24] No one looking around.
[01:24:28] But I just ask you in these very moments please, very important moments, I just ask you again, what is the vine dresser pruning out of your life this morning?
[01:24:48] How are you abiding in Jesus?
[01:24:58] And is the product that's coming forth from your life, sir, your life, ma'am, is it other believers?
[01:25:22] Father, in the silence of this moment,
[01:25:27] You know the need of every heart and every mind in this place.
[01:25:36] Lord, You know the needs of every individual.
[01:25:44] And I thank You for Your Spirit that does the work that only You can do.
[01:25:52] I thank You that You say that Your Word never returns void.
[01:25:58] And today, Lord, I've sought only to just place Your Word out there.
[01:26:05] And that every heart and mind under the sound of my voice would respond, not to me, but respond to You and to Your truth in the very words Jesus shared with His disciples that night.
[01:26:24] I pray in this invitation that you would just lead men and women all over this building to simply do what you want them to do.
[01:26:34] There are those that are lost.
[01:26:35] I pray that they would come and be saved.
[01:26:38] There are those that are needing to draw closer to you than they've ever been before.
[01:26:42] I pray they'd just come and get on this altar and just say, Lord, you're speaking to me and I needed this message on fruit bearing.
[01:26:51] And Father, I'm just surrendering myself on this altar right now that you would bear fruit, more fruit, much fruit,
[01:27:04] and Fruit that Remains.
[01:27:07] This altar is open, Father.
[01:27:09] Guide those that would just get alone with You right now to come.
[01:27:16] Father, for those that are needing a church home, I just pray that You would lead them as Your Spirit guides them if this is where they need to be, by baptism, by letter, by statement, whatever way we receive members.
[01:27:29] Lord, I pray that You would guide this invitation
[01:27:33] Right now, as we wait upon you, in Jesus' name, Amen.
[01:27:39] Would you stand to your feet as Brother Grant comes to lead us.
[01:27:42] This altar is open and we invite you to come.
[01:27:59] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]:
If you are tired of the load of your sin, let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:28:23] If you desire a new life to begin, let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:28:24] Just now your doubtings give more, just now
[01:28:32] Let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:28:50] Lift his poor purity now that you sigh.
[01:28:52] Let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:28:53] Fountains for cleansing are flowing nearby.
[01:28:55] Let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:29:01] Just now your doubtings give o'er Just now reject Him no more Just now open the door Let Jesus come into your heart If there's a tempest your voice cannot still Let Jesus come into your heart
[01:29:34] Let Jesus come into your heart Just now your doubtings give in Just now reject Him no more Just now open the door Let Jesus come into your heart
[01:30:03] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_08]:
Just bow your heads for just a moment please.
[01:30:05] Would you just bow your heads as the instruments softly play.
[01:30:08] I just want you to just listen to the presence of the Holy Spirit right now.
[01:30:13] It's just speaking into your heart.
[01:30:18] Would you just listen to what He may be saying to you today.
[01:30:25] How He may be guiding you to make a commitment in your life.
[01:30:30] How He may be bringing you to a point of surrender that is desperately needed.
[01:30:41] Would you pray for those around you?
[01:30:44] The person on your right and the person on your left.
[01:30:46] You say, Mark, I don't even know the person on my right.
[01:30:48] That's okay.
[01:30:50] God knows them.
[01:30:52] Pray for them.
[01:30:54] Right now.
[01:30:56] The person on your right and the person on your left.
[01:30:59] God would speak to them that he would make it clear what he's wanting to prune away if there are a believer again this is a fellowship passage and he's showing you right now and if if you're going through this and you realize that you don't know anything you don't abide in him or anything
[01:31:23] Listen, just being in church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage this morning made you a car.
[01:31:34] The Spirit of God brings us to the conviction that we need a Savior.
[01:31:43] And if He's doing that this morning, you need to listen to that.
[01:31:50] And you need to know what it is.
[01:31:53] To ask him to come into your heart this morning.
[01:32:00] Father, thank you for what you're doing right now.
[01:32:03] As we wait just another moment.
[01:32:07] As we sing one more verse, Father.
[01:32:10] If no one comes, you'll close the invitation today.
[01:32:14] Just guide us even as we continue to wait upon you in Jesus' name.
[01:32:24] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]:
If you would join the glad songs of the West, let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:32:47] If you would enter the mansions of the West, let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:32:49] [SPEAKER UNKNOWN]:
Just now your cowlings give birth, just now reject
[01:32:58] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_08]:
Let Jesus come into your heart.
[01:33:06] Amen.
[01:33:06] God bless you.
[01:33:07] Thank you for worshiping with us this morning.
[01:33:09] Thank you for just allowing the Holy Spirit to work and move in accordance with His perfect will today as you've listened to that still small voice.
[01:33:18] I want to invite you to be here this evening at 6 o'clock.
[01:33:22] Is our quarterly church conference, but it's more than just a conference tonight.

[01:33:30] I think there's five or so that are to be baptized tonight, which will be a great praise.
[01:33:35] We've got a couple men that we're going to ordain as deacons this evening in our time of worship as well.
[01:33:41] and then we'll have an opportunity to get some reports and share in our church conference tonight as part of that so it'll be a great evening i promise you won't be as long as that sounds uh but you make plans to be here at six o'clock this evening and uh we will gather here and it'll be a great great evening in the house of the lord as we continue to serve him

[01:34:25] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]:
Amen.
[01:34:25] Thank you so much, Pastor Mark, for the powerful message and for preaching Christ.
[01:34:30] What a beautiful message.
[01:34:31] Church, the benediction today comes from the book of Ephesians, chapter 3, starting in verse 14.
[01:34:37] This is the word of the Lord.
[01:34:38] For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you
[01:34:51] To be strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner being So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith That you being rooted and grounded in love May have the strength to comprehend with all the saints What is the breadth and the length and the height and the depth And to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge That you may be filled with all the fullness of God
[01:35:17] Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever.
[01:35:31] Amen.
[01:35:32] Would you pray with me?
[01:35:35] Holy Heavenly Father, God we truly adore you.
[01:35:38] You are the true
[01:35:40] Thine, Lord, You have prevailed where we have failed.
[01:35:44] We're so thankful for Christ.
[01:35:46] We confess our need for Him.
[01:35:48] Lord, apart from Him, we do nothing.
[01:35:50] it says so clearly in your word so help us to rely in Jesus help us to abide in Jesus help us to leave here and champion his cause lord help us to be empowered by him to do this lord we we pray for our little vineyard our little orchards that we have we pray for the preschool father we pray for trinity christian academy that it may become just that an orchard where much fruit will be produced
[01:36:15] to give you honor, glory, and praise.
[01:36:17] We ask for your help in these things.
[01:36:18] We praise you for who you are, Lord.
[01:36:20] We praise you for what you have done and what you will do.
[01:36:23] Father, have your hand upon this church.
[01:36:26] Have your spirit within her.
[01:36:27] Empower us to will and to work for your good pleasure.
[01:36:30] We ask this in your name and all God's people said.
[01:36:43] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]:
Amen.
[01:36:43] The sweet, sweet spirit
[01:37:18] Say, God, we live once, filling us with your love, and for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise.
