The Trap of Dead Orthodoxy: Why Spiritual Disciplines Without the Gospel Fail

While the sermon offers practical advice on reading Scripture and praying, it fundamentally fails to present the Gospel. By framing spiritual growth as a result of human effort and discipline rather than the transformative work of Christ's grace, the message risks leading the congregation into a dead, legalistic religion. The core engine of the Christian faith—the atoning work of Jesus—is entirely absent.

🔍 Biblical Discernment: The 7 Church Parallels
The Faithful Parallels Smyrna • Philadelphia
Teaching that parallels the churches that endure suffering with true spiritual riches (Rev 2:9) and keep the Word of Christ without denial despite having "little strength" (Rev 3:8).
The Cold Orthodox Parallel Ephesus
Teaching that upholds doctrinal precision yet parallels the loss of the "first love"—the vital, motivating power of the Gospel (Rev 2:4).
The Compromised Parallel Pergamum
Teaching that parallels churches tolerating the "doctrine of Balaam" through cultural accommodation (Rev 2:14), characterized by weak boundaries, sloppy theology, and worldly compromise.
The Corrupted & Dead Parallels Thyatira • Sardis • Laodicea
Teaching that parallels churches with active heresy, synergism, therapeutic deism, or dead orthodoxy (Rev 2:20, Rev 3:1, Rev 3:17). These represent systemic, fundamental errors that corrupt the Gospel.
Why strictly "Mark & Avoid"?
We do not issue this rating to attack the speaker, but to protect the listener. This ministry's overall teaching trend consistently deviates from sound doctrine. As per Romans 16:17, we identify these patterns so believers can guard their hearts.

🧐 Overview

Theological Verdict & Summary

Sermon Summary: Can we truly hear God's voice through Bible study alone, or are we missing the life-giving power of the Gospel?

Pastoral Analysis: While the sermon offers practical advice on reading Scripture and praying, it fundamentally fails to present the Gospel. By framing spiritual growth as a result of human effort and discipline rather than the transformative work of Christ's grace, the message risks leading the congregation into a dead, legalistic religion. The core engine of the Christian faith—the atoning work of Jesus—is entirely absent.

Biblical Parallel (Archetype): Sardis — The sermon presents a 'name that it is alive, but is dead' orthodoxy. While it maintains the form of religious discipline and biblical study, it completely omits the life-giving power of the Gospel. By reducing the Christian life to a system of self-directed spiritual disciplines and moral exhortation without anchoring it in the finished work of Christ, the teaching falls into the trap of dead orthodoxy and synergistic effort.

Big Idea: Believers learn to hear God's voice and navigate confusion not through dramatic signs or accumulating information, but by building a transformative relationship with God through daily dependence on Scripture and the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit. [00:40:05 ▶️ 📄]

🧭 Biblical Alignment Dashboard

Overall Verdict: Fundamentally in Error

CategoryStatusReasoning
Gospel Presentation ❌ FAIL The Gospel Engine is not intact. The sermon completely omits the Gospel, failing to present Penal Substitutionary Atonement, Total Depravity, or Monergistic Regeneration. Instead, it reduces the Christian life to a system of self-directed spiritual disciplines and moral exhortation.
Soteriology ❌ FAIL The sermon omits the Gospel entirely, presenting salvation and sanctification as results of human effort rather than God's grace.
Bibliology ✅ PASS The sermon correctly identifies Scripture as a means of relationship and transformation, though it lacks the Gospel context.
Hermeneutic ✅ PASS The hermeneutic approach of seeking context and avoiding modern imposition is sound.
Theology Proper ✅ PASS The view of God as a loving Father who guides is generally consistent, though the mechanism of interaction is flawed.
Sacramentology ⚪ N/A No sacramental errors detected.
Confessional Depth ❌ SHALLOW The sermon lacks depth in soteriology and the doctrine of grace, focusing instead on practical moralism.

⚙️ The Core Gospel Framework

What is this? This section checks if the sermon contains the essential building blocks of the Gospel. We look for explicit, substantive mentions of God's holy standard, human inability, and Christ's finished work on the cross.

Why it matters for the final verdict: A complete Gospel framework protects a sermon from becoming man-centered. If a preacher gives commands for good behavior but leaves out the grace and atonement of the Gospel, it often results in a 🔴 Critical or 🟠 Major error for Moralism (teaching human self-improvement rather than reliance on Christ). However, if these Gospel elements are missing simply because the pastor is preaching a highly focused, practical message to mature believers (e.g., instructions on biblical marriage), our system applies a "Safe Harbor" pardon, graciously reducing the omission to a 🟡 Minor error.

The Law And Wrath:

"God wouldn't send me to hell yes he will" [01:04:47 ▶️ 📄]

Total Depravity And Inability: Not observed in the sermon.

Active Obedience Of Christ: Not observed in the sermon.

The Cross And Atonement: Not observed in the sermon.

⚠️ Theological Concerns

🔴 Critical Gospel Omission

Root Cause: Moralism

The Belief/Behavior: The pastor presents spiritual growth and guidance as the result of human effort, specifically through daily Bible reading, prayer, and obedience, without mentioning the Gospel, Christ's atonement, or God's initiating grace.

Why It's Dangerous: This leads the congregation into a dead, legalistic religion where they rely on their own performance rather than Christ's finished work. It creates anxiety and pride, as success is measured by discipline rather than faith.

Biblical Correction: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

✅ Commendations

Practical Application | Emphasis on Relational Bible Reading

The pastor correctly identifies that the Bible is not merely a textbook for information but a means to build a relationship with God. This shifts the focus from intellectual accumulation to personal transformation.

Pastoral Care | Grace-Filled Guidance Analogy

The GPS analogy effectively illustrates God's patience and loving redirection, providing comfort to believers who feel overwhelmed by their lack of clarity.

Doctrinal Clarity | Illumination by the Holy Spirit

The sermon rightly emphasizes the necessity of the Holy Spirit's illumination for understanding Scripture, acknowledging human spiritual blindness.

[00:38:00] Church, it's good to be in the house of the Lord.
[00:38:02] Amen.
[00:38:03] Feels a little empty without our youth and many of our adults.
[00:38:07] We had such an awesome crew going to camp.
[00:38:10] I am so excited for them.
[00:38:12] So excited.
[00:38:13] Can't wait for them to get back.
[00:38:16] And so, yeah, we end up sending 31 people.
[00:38:20] Packed them into two vans.
[00:38:22] And they were a little nervous, but they went.
[00:38:24] Amen.
[00:38:25] So, amen.
[00:38:26] You may be seated.
[00:38:27] We're going to go ahead and release our nursery, We Fish, in Upper Elementary.
[00:38:30] If you're youth here tonight, I think most of them got the message, stay home.
[00:38:34] Those that were here, you're hanging out with me, if that's okay.
[00:38:38] I'm going to share something with you.
[00:38:42] And it's, I got a little bit of a, like I'm in a coffee can, brother.
[00:38:50] If you can kind of get that out of there, I'd appreciate it.
[00:38:55] So Sunday, my wife is going to be preaching for Father's Day.
[00:39:03] amen i don't know if i told you that or not so you may get this message that i'm preaching tonight you may get it twice you may get it this wednesday and you may get it next wednesday i don't know
[00:39:12] we'll see how it goes um i may i may just refresh your memory next week with it because i'm going to preach the message that goes with it uh the sunday after father's day and then of course
[00:39:25] we are baptizing sunday morning if you're interested in being baptized whether it's your first time or whether it's your fifth time, amen? I don't think the Bible says anything about how many times, amen? So bring a change of clothes, bring whatever you need, amen? And we're going to
[00:39:45] have a good time, amen? So open up your Bibles, if you would, to 2 Timothy. 2 Timothy chapter 3.
[00:39:53] 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 16. I'm going to read 16 and 17. I've entitled this tonight Learning to hear the voice through his word.
[00:40:05] Learning to hear God's voice through his word.
[00:40:09] In this five-week series that I've started, my goal is not to preach at people, even though I'm preaching sometimes.
[00:40:20] And it's not to tell you what you're doing wrong.
[00:40:23] Okay, that's easy to do.
[00:40:25] Anybody can look at anybody else's life and immediately begin to identify the things that they're doing wrong, right?
[00:40:30] It's not hard. But my goal is to inspire, amen, is to inspire us to want to be led by the Spirit, amen. And tonight I want to just share some things with you because I've been talking about the
[00:40:45] confusion. I've been talking about culture. How does a believer, how does a believer learn to recognize God's voice in the middle of confusion, amen, in the middle of confusion? The Word of God talks about the peace that surpasses all understanding, right? Peace that surpasses
[00:41:05] all understanding. That's what I'm talking about, amen? But 2 Timothy chapter 3 and verse 16 and 17 says, all scripture, all scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness,
[00:41:26] that the man of God or woman may be completely or complete, equipped for every good work, amen?
[00:41:34] Equipped for every good work.
[00:41:36] Father, we praise you, we thank you, Father God.
[00:41:39] Lord, I'd ask that tonight, Father God, that you'd open up your word to us, that we could glean and draw from your word, Father God, that we can go deeper into your word and understand you even more, Father God.
[00:41:50] Lord, I just praise you.
[00:41:51] I thank you tonight, Father, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.
[00:41:57] Instead of teaching people primarily what to think about culture issues, I want to teach you how to become people who are led by the Spirit through the Word.
[00:42:11] Only two ways to build a relationship with God, okay?
[00:42:16] Only two ways.
[00:42:16] I'm going to move down here, brother.
[00:42:18] one is in prayer two is in the word okay so there's only two ways to build a relationship with God okay prayer and the word and so I want to inspire you I want to teach you I want to show
[00:42:36] you in the word of God rather than rather than combating culture talking about what it is to be spirit-led, right? So God has not left us, his people, confused. God's not a God of confusion.
[00:42:53] God's a God of order. God's a God of laying things out step by step. The Holy Spirit uses the word of God to guide believers into truth, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. That's the goal, spiritual
[00:43:08] maturity, growing spiritually with God, right? And the Holy Spirit is the one that is the comforter, is the paraclete, is the one that comes alongside to lead us and guide us into that, right, into
[00:43:20] that maturity. But have you ever wished, you're seeking God, and have you ever wished that God would just write the answer in the sky? You ever wish that, right? Take this job, move to that city,
[00:43:36] right talk to that person or don't buy that truck maybe those questions we're asking God right and sometimes we feel like sometimes we feel like hearing from God is like talking to somebody that talks in innuendos do you know what that means right they never really give you a
[00:43:54] straight answer they just have all these little idioms like for instance they might say we might ask God, God, should I take this new job? And we feel like God's answers sometimes are like this.
[00:44:09] You've been here long enough to know the ropes. Maybe it's time to start fishing for something new. We're like, is that a yes? Is that a no? What do I do, God? Right? You ever feel that way when
[00:44:19] you're seeking God? We might ask God, we're looking for a clear answer, but instead we sense nudges, impressions partial light for the next step it can feel as though we're never we never quite receive the full explanation it can make us feel like maybe God's holding out on us maybe he's not
[00:44:45] giving us the whole truth you ever feel that way in seeking God and you're right we read the Bible about about the fleece how many times he put out the fleece because he was feeling the same way
[00:44:57] He's like, God, I want a straight answer, right?
[00:45:01] Yet, this does not always mean that God is distant or unwilling to speak.
[00:45:07] Sometimes when we're struggling to hear from God, it doesn't mean that God is not near.
[00:45:13] It doesn't mean that God's not willing to speak.
[00:45:17] He leads us in a way that invites trust, patience, and dependence rather than complete certainty all at once, right?
[00:45:30] I'm the type of person that when somebody brings me something to do, I want them to let go of it and let me have it.
[00:45:38] You know what I'm talking about?
[00:45:39] I worked for an engineer one time and I was doing some drafting and he was giving it to me a piece at a time.
[00:45:46] And I'm like, dude, just let me have the whole thing and let me run with it.
[00:45:49] But he'd give me little bite sizes and it frustrated me, right?
[00:45:54] And sometimes we feel that way with God.
[00:45:56] Sometimes we get impatient.
[00:45:57] but God is doing these things not because he's trying to rule over us but he's doing these things because God never really gives us the whole picture I don't know if possibly we can't handle it
[00:46:10] if God were to give you the whole picture

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]
[00:46:12] all at once God show me the next 10 years of my life

[00:46:17] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]
[00:46:17] right but instead God says I want you to trust me I want you to be patient because I'm going to give you a little bit at a time but I'm going to talk to you
[00:46:29] I'm going to speak to you, right?
[00:46:32] I believe that most believers sincerely want God's guidance.
[00:46:36] We want God's guidance.
[00:46:37] We want to know his will.
[00:46:39] We want to make wise decisions.
[00:46:41] We want to follow his leading.
[00:46:44] But yet we struggle with a basic question.
[00:46:48] How does God actually guide us, right?
[00:46:51] How does this happen?
[00:46:56] Some are looking for dramatic signs, right?
[00:46:58] God, give me a sign.
[00:47:00] Others are wanting an audible voice, right?
[00:47:04] And still we feel frustrated because we don't know how to discern God's direction.
[00:47:09] You see, but the good news is God's not trying to hide his will from us.
[00:47:15] He desires to lead us, right?
[00:47:17] But the primary way that he does that is through his spirit, is through his Holy Spirit.
[00:47:25] It's the Holy Spirit and it's God's word working together.
[00:47:28] right the holy spirit and god's word working together so this is why it's so important that that we that we know god's word that we're in god's word that we're spending time in prayer that we hear that voice and we know the voice right so god's word the the word of god says
[00:47:50] that god's word is a lamp not a floodlight it's a lamp not a floodlight what do you mean psalms 119 105 says your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path now notice what the
[00:48:12] psalmist didn't say he did not say that god's word is lights in a stadium he did not say that god's word was a floodlight he said it was a lamp you see in biblical times a lamp illuminated only
[00:48:31] a few steps ahead. It gave enough light for the next step of obedience. You see, and that's what God desires from us. God didn't want us to run sometimes. God wants us just to take that next
[00:48:45] step. Just trust him and take that next step, right? That's why it says that it's a lamp.
[00:48:55] It gave enough light, right? Not the next 10 years, just the next step. You see, I don't have to plan out the next 10 years with God. I just have to take the next step. I just have to do the
[00:49:09] next thing that he's calling me to do. You see, many believers, we want God to reveal the entire plan. That's the way I am. God, just tell me what's going to happen. Good, bad, or indifferent,
[00:49:22] right? God don't work that way. God just usually reveals the next step, the next thing. Why?
[00:49:30] Because our faith grows through daily dependence, through daily dependence.
[00:49:36] You see, we look at the children of Israel in the wilderness, and God wanted their dependence upon them.
[00:49:42] And they're just like us, right?
[00:49:44] They got sick of manna.
[00:49:47] They got sick of quail, right?
[00:49:50] God, you brought us out here to die.
[00:49:54] I just laugh because I've had those moments with God where I'm like, God, come on, right?
[00:50:02] But you see, faith grows through daily dependence.
[00:50:06] God's building our faith.
[00:50:08] God wants you to trust him.
[00:50:09] God wants you to put your reliance upon him.
[00:50:14] I want to read this to you.
[00:50:17] Psalms 119, beginning with verse one.
[00:50:22] That whole psalm is so good.
[00:50:24] Go back and read that.
[00:50:25] Psalm 119.
[00:50:27] It's got over 100 verses in it.
[00:50:29] That's why I'm not going to read the whole thing.
[00:50:32] But I wanted to pick a couple of things.
[00:50:33] verses 1 through 8 says blessed are those whose way is blameless who walk in the law of the Lord blessed are those who keep his testimonies who seek him with their whole heart who also do no wrong
[00:50:48] but walk in his ways you have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently listen to what he's saying oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes then I shall not be put to shame
[00:51:03] having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
[00:51:05] I will praise you with an upright heart when I learn your righteous rules.
[00:51:10] I will keep your statutes.
[00:51:12] Do not utterly forsake me.
[00:51:15] I love what he's saying there.
[00:51:18] Be diligent in keeping God's word.
[00:51:20] Be diligent in keeping his commands.
[00:51:24] Why?
[00:51:25] Because as we learn to do that, right, we grow, we mature, right?
[00:51:32] The Holy Spirit never leads.
[00:51:34] contrary to scripture.
[00:51:36] The Holy Spirit never leads contrary to scripture.
[00:51:41] So if you're believing God and you're standing on the word and you're standing on a promise, right?
[00:51:46] God will never give you an answer that is contrary to his word.
[00:51:51] So that's part of the knowing is if you don't know God's word, how do you know God's given you a word?
[00:51:59] You see, part of the struggle is us.
[00:52:04] John 16, 13, this is something that we read all the time, right?
[00:52:08] When the spirit of truth comes, Jesus calls, this is Jesus speaking, he calls the Holy Spirit the spirit of truth.
[00:52:16] So when the Holy Spirit comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
[00:52:20] For he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak.
[00:52:25] And he will declare to you the things that are to come.
[00:52:28] You see, we've got a promise.
[00:52:30] We've got a promise that the Holy Spirit will declare to us the things that are to come.
[00:52:35] That the Holy Spirit will speak to us If we build our relationship with God in prayer, then the Holy Spirit comes alongside.
[00:52:43] And that's the voice that we hear in our ears.
[00:52:45] That's the voice that we hear in our inner self.
[00:52:48] And he will make known to you the things that are to come, right?
[00:52:51] Instead of going left, he may say, go right, because he knows.
[00:52:59] Verse 14, he will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
[00:53:05] All that the Father has is mine.
[00:53:07] Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and he will declare it to you.
[00:53:12] You see, you have a promise in the word that all the promises that belong to Jesus, the Holy Spirit will declare them to us.
[00:53:23] I have a promise.
[00:53:26] Amen.
[00:53:27] But notice that Jesus calls the Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth, not a spirit of confusion, right?
[00:53:33] God has not given us a spirit of confusion, right?
[00:53:36] God keeps him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon him.
[00:53:40] Not a spirit of contradiction, not the spirit of personal preference.
[00:53:50] You see, the Holy Spirit and the scripture always agree because both originated from God.
[00:53:58] The Holy Spirit and the word of God always agree.
[00:54:04] Why does this matter?
[00:54:07] Because we want guidance.
[00:54:09] But guidance without truth becomes dangerous.

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_06]
[00:54:13] Mm, right?

[00:54:17] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]
[00:54:17] someone comes up to you and gives you a word, but yet you're not certain about the word of God and you can't compare that word.
[00:54:28] Even my preaching, right?
[00:54:30] I say this all the time.
[00:54:31] I may misspeak.
[00:54:32] I said something a couple of Sundays ago and Stella corrected me.
[00:54:35] She's like, you said this, is that?
[00:54:36] I was like, oh no, that's not right.
[00:54:42] But if you know your word, if you've been in your word, people come to you and they give you a word and you're like, hey, that fits.
[00:54:48] That fits with the word of God.
[00:54:49] That fits in my life.
[00:54:51] You don't have to be rude about it.
[00:54:52] Just let it go in one ear and out the other.
[00:54:55] If it's not right, unless the Holy Spirit tells you, hey, you need to correct that.
[00:54:59] Hey, bro, that's what the word of God says, right?
[00:55:09] The Holy Spirit does not invent new truth, right?
[00:55:14] For he will not speak on his own authority.
[00:55:17] The Holy Spirit's got authority.
[00:55:20] The Holy Spirit's got authority, but he will not speak concerning the word out of his own authority.
[00:55:30] Listen to what it says.
[00:55:31] He will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears He will speak And he would declare it to you the things that are to come He doesn't speak out of his own authority. He speaks out of the authority of god the father
[00:55:48] And he only speaks what he hears He illuminates god's truth. He helps us understand it. He helps us apply it. He helps us walk in it, right?
[00:55:59] I taught you these things last wednesday, right? He teaches he guides That's the holy spirit's job You see, as spirit-filled believers, we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit.
[00:56:12] We believe that he speaks.
[00:56:14] We believe that he guides.
[00:56:15] We believe that he directs.
[00:56:18] But every impression, every prompting, and every leading should measure against Scripture.
[00:56:24] We always bring it back to the Word.
[00:56:26] We should always bring it back to the Word, right?
[00:56:31] I feel like the Holy Spirit's telling me to, right?
[00:56:36] What does the Word say about that?
[00:56:37] scripture trains us scripture trains us for real life second timothy 3 16 and 17 is where i started right all scripture is breathed out by god and profitable for teaching for reproofing for correction and for training in righteousness we don't we don't like that correction part do we
[00:57:01] the word of god is inspired it is god breathed right this is this is how the word was written right was was paul and and and peter and and james and john are writing the word of god
[00:57:18] as god is breathing them and inspiring them but but it's not just there right paul uses these four words he says teaching he says the bible shows us what is true i just want the truth
[00:57:37] Get into your word, because the word is true.
[00:57:42] Rebuking.
[00:57:45] The Bible shows us where we are wrong, right?
[00:57:48] I don't know about you, but I'm more inclined as a pastor, I say this to people, don't put me in a spot where I have to be the bad guy.
[00:57:57] I don't like being the bad guy.
[00:57:59] You see, if we get into our word and we let the Holy Spirit bring correction and rebuke us, then, right?
[00:58:08] Nobody has to know about it.
[00:58:11] The Bible shows us where we're wrong, rebuking, right?
[00:58:17] Correcting, the Bible shows us how to get back on course.
[00:58:21] Correcting, training, the Bible teaches us how to stay on course, right?
[00:58:29] So we notice God's heart here, that scripture is not merely information.
[00:58:35] Scripture is not merely information.
[00:58:37] I know more Bible verses than you do.
[00:58:40] No, it's not what it's about.
[00:58:43] The word of God is for transformation.
[00:58:46] I said that, right?
[00:58:47] I believe last week that the Holy Spirit is not so that we can flex our spiritual muscles, but the Holy Spirit is for mission.
[00:58:56] God's word is for transformation.
[00:58:59] Change me, oh God.
[00:59:00] Get into God's word.
[00:59:01] Let God's word change you.
[00:59:03] Don't put yourself in a position where people around you, where spiritual authorities have to come in and bring correction.
[00:59:10] Get into your word and you make those changes.
[00:59:13] You make those corrections.
[00:59:14] God didn't just give us his word simply to win arguments he gave us his word to shape our lives right Proverbs says be careful not to argue with a fool because somebody might walk up and not know
[00:59:43] who the fool is

[00:59:44] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]
[00:59:44] we always want to win those arguments he always does that to me he comes up and he says something about the Bible and I don't know what to say and then I walk off and I think about it
[00:59:56] I should have said this and I should have said that

[01:00:00] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]
[01:00:00] That's not what the Bible's for.
[01:00:03] It's not to win arguments.
[01:00:05] It's to let it shape our lives, right?
[01:00:07] I shared this with you a couple of weeks ago or last week about a GPS, right?
[01:00:12] The GPS doesn't shame you when you miss a turn.
[01:00:15] It simply says recalculating, right?
[01:00:23] God's word is often like that.
[01:00:25] The word is not looking for opportunities to condemn his children.
[01:00:29] He lovingly redirects us towards the truth.
[01:00:33] That's God.
[01:00:35] You see, God's not waiting up there for you to make a mistake to bonk you on the head.
[01:00:40] God's waiting for you to come back to him and let him lovingly redirect you.
[01:00:48] That's the way God works.
[01:00:50] It's us.
[01:00:52] It's us that always want to point out, right, the things that we've done wrong, our mistakes, our inadequacies, right?
[01:01:01] But God says, hey, I want to just redirect you.
[01:01:05] Let me just shift your course.
[01:01:08] You see, so the goal is not information.
[01:01:12] It's relationship.
[01:01:15] The goal is not information.
[01:01:17] I don't read my Bible to have more information.
[01:01:20] I read my Bible to build a relationship.
[01:01:22] That's a big difference.
[01:01:25] It's a big difference.
[01:01:28] You see, I'm not reading my Bible so I can prove that brother wrong.
[01:01:33] I'm reading my Bible to build a relationship with God because I need to know his voice.
[01:01:39] I need to know the voice of the Holy Spirit.
[01:01:41] why so that i can immediately be obedient to it right i've said this before right delay is disobedience i heard somebody say that the other day on a on a program i was watching and i was
[01:01:55] like i said that i don't know where i got it from you see the goal is not information it's relationship it's one of the dangers in bible study is treating scripture like a textbook the bible is more than
[01:02:16] information i was talking to somebody i had a just a incredible uh visit with a couple of missionaries that we support they came through town and and we went and had uh i met with them
[01:02:31] and they were telling me about that they they minister to their part of chi alpha they minister on the campus and they're in idaho and the campus that they're on has 22 000 students 22 000 i was
[01:02:45] like and uh that wasn't me and uh she was she was telling me that the the wife of the missionary their two missionaries together they were telling me about this young man that uh he got saved on
[01:03:07] tiktok he searched tiktok for how do i get saved and it popped up a prayer and he prayed the prayer and got saved and then he's he was he's walking across campus and he's asking god god show me
[01:03:21] somebody who's a Christian. And they ran into each other and they started talking and he started telling them his story. And he's like, I don't know anything about God. I didn't grow up in a
[01:03:33] Christian home. My mom and dad were divorced at a young age. I've never been to church.
[01:03:40] They were just blown away. And they got him a Bible. And he went the first night.
[01:03:48] And in the next five days, he read the Bible from cover to cover. And she was like, I don't think it's supposed to work that way. It's not a textbook. It's not a book that you read that way,
[01:04:02] right? You can read it that way. I understand that that happens, but it's not about gathering information. It's about building a relationship. It's about building a relationship. It is God.
[01:04:19] God's word is God revealing himself to us because through scripture, we learn who God is, what he's like how he works how much he loves us that's why the old testament is so important is because because we get to see how god works bad news on a spoiler alert right we're not going
[01:04:47] to live in a dispensation of grace all the time when jesus comes back the dispensation of grace ends and judgment begins what are we gonna right maybe that's a message for a later time we just have a society
[01:05:12] and not even society we have church people that think that they're getting into heaven just because God's a good God God wouldn't send me to hell yes he will well let me back up God's not going to send you to hell
[01:05:28] your sin's going to send you to hell but God is a just God he's a God of judgment he's a God of love but God's judgment in God's judgment he doesn't make any mistakes because he's perfect.
[01:05:47] John chapter five and verse 22 says, for the father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the son that all may honor the son just as they honor the father.
[01:06:00] Whoever does not honor the son does not honor the father who sent him.
[01:06:04] Listen to what the word of God is saying here.
[01:06:06] Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.
[01:06:12] he does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life you see we struggle this we struggle as church as christians because we say we love some people but we don't love others
[01:06:27] and jesus says if you can't love your brother who you see how can you love a god who you can't see right if you don't love your brother then the love of god is not in you
[01:06:43] This is why this series is more about the church than it is an unsaved world.
[01:06:50] Because I believe it's time for the church to begin to stand up and be and do what God's called us to do, right?
[01:06:58] Three things that God's called us to do.
[01:07:01] Live by the great commandment, minister the great commission, and I just went blank.
[01:07:12] Oh, oh, and train, train the people of God in the word into spiritual maturity, right?
[01:07:24] That's the mission of the church right there.
[01:07:28] You see, the goal of reading the Bible is not merely gaining knowledge.
[01:07:32] The goal is knowing Christ more deeply, knowing knowledge alone can produce pride, but knowing Christ produces transformation and humility.
[01:07:48] I feel like it's really different than what maybe you've heard, right?
[01:07:53] but I want to challenge us not challenge you necessarily but inspire you to begin to say I want to be led by the Spirit I don't want a doctrine of legalism I don't want to go to a church
[01:08:07] that's a church of religion I want to be led by the Spirit how do we do that?
[01:08:14] number one, get into your word if you've never done this start in the Gospel of John it's the best place to start reading your Bible and listen I love this because we got technology.
[01:08:29] There's an app that I have on my phone.
[01:08:32] It's called the Bible app.
[01:08:35] And you go into that app and you can set up a Bible reading plan.
[01:08:39] You can set up a devotion that pops up every morning on your phone.
[01:08:43] And it's not just boring reading the Bible.
[01:08:48] There's stuff in there for different ages, different categories, different stations of life that you will find interesting.
[01:08:56] Not just one.
[01:08:57] There's hundreds on there.
[01:08:58] and you can set it up to where, hey, I want to read the Bible in a year and you set that app up and every morning it tells you, hey, read this chapter, read this chapter,
[01:09:07] read this chapter, read this chapter.
[01:09:09] And sometimes we start out in checking off the boxes because it gives you boxes to check.
[01:09:14] But what my hope is is in the process that transformation begins and you begin to fall in love with your first love again all over.
[01:09:23] It's powerful.
[01:09:26] The Holy Spirit makes the word come alive.
[01:09:29] the Holy Spirit makes the word come alive we've experienced this right you've read a passage dozens of times John 3 16 right for God so loved the world and all of a sudden you're reading it
[01:09:42] one day and and and you see something that you never seen this this morning I was in prayer and uh I was praying I put on the armor of God and and one of the things is that my I put on
[01:09:54] my shoes are shod. And this hit me this morning. My shoes are shod. I'm thinking the gospel of peace, right? It's what the word of God says. But there's a word there before it says for the
[01:10:04] readiness, for the prepared of the gospel of peace. My feet are shod with the preparation and it hit me. God, I'm ready. I'm prepared today. I'm ready to come out of my prayer closet and
[01:10:22] take on the world. Take on everything that you have for me. Why? Because my feet are prepared.
[01:10:28] And I'm prepared, right?
[01:10:32] Those are things that the word just comes alive in you.
[01:10:36] The Holy Spirit illuminates truth, not because the text changed, because he opened our understanding.
[01:10:43] And this is the thing, right?
[01:10:44] Because I get people all the time, I don't understand the Bible.
[01:10:47] I want to read the Bible, but I don't understand it, okay?
[01:10:48] So before you get into your reading your Bible, ask the Holy Spirit, pray.
[01:10:53] Holy Spirit, give me insight, give me wisdom.
[01:10:55] Open up, right?
[01:10:57] Remove the scales from me.
[01:10:58] open up the eyes of my understanding that's what Paul prayed God I pray that the eyes that their understanding the scales coming off ask him and you watch the Holy Spirit will show up in the middle of your prayer
[01:11:18] right, Patricia shared that this last weekend, right she had a hard time reading right, a room may contain beautiful artwork but if you walked into that room and all the lights were off, you wouldn't be able to appreciate the art.
[01:11:44] You hear what I'm saying, right?
[01:11:47] He helps us to see what God has already revealed.
[01:11:55] We see this in Jesus teaching the disciples.
[01:11:59] They came to him, they said, Jesus, why do you talk to the people in parables?
[01:12:08] Go find that, some of you, right?
[01:12:15] He helps us see what God has already revealed, right?
[01:12:21] So before reading your Bible, pray.
[01:12:25] Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you because he's a teacher.
[01:12:31] Ask him to reveal Christ.
[01:12:34] Ask him to show you areas of growth.
[01:12:36] Ask him to bring correction to you.
[01:12:41] We get into this mode.
[01:12:42] I do, okay?
[01:12:44] I'll be transparent with you.
[01:12:47] I get into this mode sometimes, especially in preaching.
[01:12:50] I have to be real careful because all of a sudden I'll shift and I'll get real condemning.
[01:12:57] Right?
[01:12:57] There's truth in what I'm saying, but you could say it a little bit better.
[01:13:02] Does that make sense?
[01:13:03] And sometimes we read the bible that way we read the bible because we want to bring correction to others But god wants us to read the bible and pray for transformation for ourselves You used to have a pastor that would always tell always say it's me. Oh god standing in the need of prayer
[01:13:22] But as christians we tend to look To the left and to the right And we never actually hold the mirror up in front of us And that's what i'm trying to challenge you trying to inspire you to do is to begin to hold that mirror up in front of your face and say god
[01:13:42] how do i need to change change me oh god because if if if if brother sergio's up here working hard on himself and brother chris is up here working hard on himself and i'm working hard on myself
[01:13:58] all of a sudden the the bickering and the jealousy and the envy disappears why because we're working on ourselves to get better with god to get closer to god but but what happens is the holy spirit
[01:14:11] begins to transform us and the same thing that he's doing in chris chris says let me share with you brother sergio what god was showing me in the word and brother sergio's like hey that is so
[01:14:20] awesome god was showing me the same thing and then sunday morning i step into the pulpit and i begin to preach exactly what the holy spirit's been showing you all week long it happens right is
[01:14:31] that not right melissa right i was preaching and she's like pastor you got to look at my notes right friday night in here listening to patricia she's preaching she was preaching my message she was preaching my message edgar was sitting next to me and i kept punching him dude she's
[01:14:53] preaching my message how do we study our bibles without a seminary degree how do we do that right because honestly i have people that i don't understand it read carefully slow down listen you don't have to read through the whole bible every year to be a good christian if you
[01:15:24] read one verse if you read one chapter but you get to the end of it and you understand it you've accomplished something if it's just one verse right it's not about how much it's about
[01:15:39] digging and getting out of it what god has for you that day it might be one verse it's not about the mass it's not about oh yeah right because people come up to you and we've done it before
[01:15:59] we've done it as a congregation read through the bible in a year right oh i read through the bible every year pastor that's awesome and then other people are like i ain't even picked up my bible
[01:16:12] and we think we have to do something like that but it happens with fasting pastor i'm gonna fast for two weeks with you but i've never fasted i'm like no no no no no just do one day just
[01:16:28] do one day right so how do we do this read it carefully if you only get through one verse that's okay but when you get through that one verse know what it actually says understand the
[01:16:47] context how do i understand context many times i tell people if you come across a therefore in the bible always go up to the next verse always go up to the next chapter and that therefore will be in
[01:16:58] that next in the previous i'm sorry not the next in the previous i i just have learned to study the bible that way if if i'm preaching out a message uh timothy today i'm reading uh not just
[01:17:11] chapter two but but i'm going back into into chapter one right and i'm reading what he said there what paul is speaking to him there and then i'm going down to to chapter three sometimes i
[01:17:24] end up on a rabbit trail right i'm sorry it's chapter i thought it was wrong chapter three So I'm reading chapter 2, but then I'm also going down, dropping down into chapter 4, right?
[01:17:34] I did that today.
[01:17:35] I'm reading away, and all of a sudden I start reading my commentary and start reading the notes.

[01:17:39] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_01]
[01:17:39] And before you know it, I'm like, oh, man, that's so good, God.

[01:17:43] [SPEAKER SPEAKER_00]
[01:17:43] Has nothing to do with what I'm sharing with you tonight.
[01:17:59] Now I lost my spot.
[01:18:00] Now here we go.
[01:18:04] Right?
[01:18:05] So ask the Holy Spirit to teach you.
[01:18:07] Ask him to reveal Christ.
[01:18:09] Ask him to show you years of growth, right?
[01:18:11] understand in reading the word of God understand the context how do we do that read before and after figure out who's speaking go to the front of your Bible go to the very very very beginning page
[01:18:26] it'll tell you the gospel of John written by or if you look at Psalms it'll tell you not sure who the writer of Psalms is Solomon wrote many of the Psalms David wrote some of the Psalms
[01:18:38] right and in the Psalms it'll tell you at the beginning of the chapter a psalm written by right go go go read some of david's laments when he's you know being oppressed that the people in the bible they battled with the exact same things that we battled with
[01:18:57] they battled with fear they battled with feeling overwhelmed can you imagine moses bringing a million people out of out of egypt and pastoring a million people where god says that he would sit from morning till night listening to and counseling the people.
[01:19:21] And his father-in-law finally gave him an idea.
[01:19:22] Bro, why don't you train somebody to do what you're doing?
[01:19:26] Why don't you put a system or a process in place?
[01:19:29] Quit trying to do it all yourself, right?
[01:19:35] Understand who's speaking, who is listening, who is he speaking to, and what's happening, right?
[01:19:43] Try to understand the context, right?
[01:19:45] Because we westernize the Bible.
[01:19:47] We take the Bible and we bring it into us, and it doesn't make sense to us, but you gotta sometimes understand the cultural context of their culture as you read it.
[01:19:57] It's all there for you.
[01:19:58] You just gotta do a little digging.
[01:20:00] And now with Google in your back pocket, you can Google it now.
[01:20:04] Now, listen, be careful because if you search a scripture and you're on AI and you find that scripture and it gives you that scripture, go to your Bible and read it, okay?
[01:20:16] Go to your Bible and read it because I'll do that from time to time.
[01:20:19] I'll say, where's this in the Bible?
[01:20:22] And he'll give me that, but I go to my Bible and I read it.
[01:20:25] I don't take AI's word for it, right?
[01:20:30] Because you could Google it.
[01:20:31] Who wrote the book of Timothy, right?
[01:20:34] It'll tell you, Paul.
[01:20:36] Who did he write it to?
[01:20:37] He wrote it to young Timothy who was pastoring a church, right?
[01:20:40] He was young and he's pastoring a church of old people.
[01:20:47] And Paul's telling him, hey, don't let anybody despise your youth.
[01:20:53] It's powerful.
[01:20:55] And it's all in there, right?
[01:20:58] Last thing, compare scripture with scripture, right?
[01:21:03] There's a saying that says the Bible will interpret itself.
[01:21:11] Get you a good study Bible, fire Bible, excellent study Bible.
[01:21:17] It's got those little letters and you can go to the bottom of the page and it'll give you some other scriptures.
[01:21:23] It'll give you some insights and commentary, right?
[01:21:29] Go to other passages, read those passages.
[01:21:31] Come back to the passage you're reading in, okay?
[01:21:34] probably what's going to happen is you're going to go to that passage and then you're going to go to another passage and then you're going to go to another and you're going to forget where you
[01:21:40] started at okay that's that's usually what happens to me but it's good it's work it's work but then we have to apply it personally truth becomes powerful when it moves from information to obedience when i take truth and i begin to apply it to my life and all of a sudden it becomes
[01:22:05] obedience in my life. Now there's power in it. God's not abandoned his people. God's not left us in confusion. He's given us his word. He's given us the Holy Spirit. He's given us the church
[01:22:25] and he's given us his promises. And those are the things that we're to live on. Those are the things that we're to hold on to. The Holy Spirit is not leading believers away from scripture.
[01:22:39] Be very careful.
[01:22:40] Let me touch on this.
[01:22:51] I'm not going to do it right now.
[01:22:53] I'll come back to it.
[01:23:00] The Bible, here's what I will say.
[01:23:03] The Bible consists of 66 books.
[01:23:09] There were no books of the Bible that were left out, okay?
[01:23:14] There were no books of the Bible that were left out.
[01:23:17] If you read a Catholic Bible, there's some extra books.
[01:23:28] I'll touch on that and show you why.
[01:23:36] The deeper, the more intimate we know God's word, the more confident that we can walk through a confusing world.
[01:23:44] You see, this is what it's all about.
[01:23:46] It's not about studying a textbook and having this knowledge so that you can answer that brother that's always questioning your Bible, your person at work.
[01:23:57] Well, I read the Bible and it says this.
[01:24:01] And they're regurgitating somebody else that was on YouTube that had a vlog talking about how the Bible contradicts itself.
[01:24:11] That's not what it's about.
[01:24:13] Ignore those people, right?
[01:24:17] Just tell them, hey, the reason you're having a hard time understanding it is because it wasn't written to you.
[01:24:23] It was written to Christians, right?
[01:24:26] You ever pick up somebody's love letter in middle school?
[01:24:30] It's like, dude, that is so boring and so sappy and so awful.
[01:24:36] Well, it wasn't written to you.
[01:24:45] The deeper, the more intimate we know God's word, the more confidently that we can walk through a confusing world you want to shut out the noise get to know your word so then you pick up on when the Holy Spirit's talking to you
[01:24:58] in the midst of all that noise in the midst of all that confusion the word of God says he keeps him he keeps her in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him what's the promise you're standing on today
[01:25:10] what's the word that the Holy Spirit has given you out of your Bible that you read today that's what I'm standing on that's what I'm using in my mind every time those imaginations come every time those thoughts come
[01:25:23] we've got to have something to flush it out with and that's the word so it's not about combating the confusion it's not about combating culture it's about knowing knowing the word of God being led by the spirit of God
[01:25:46] knowing that voice that small still voice in your ear and getting to know it so that why so that when God speaks to you you can respond immediately amen stand with me if you would short and sweet pastor we like those
[01:26:01] amen so listen i just want to challenge you if you're not a bible reader become a bible reader if you're not a person that spends time in prayer spend time in prayer start start with five minutes
[01:26:16] get up five minutes earlier right instead of going to facebook on your phone go to a bible app there's there's many of them out there and you can set an alarm that'll pop up a devotion on your
[01:26:30] right it'll send a reminder hey you haven't read today but spend five minutes with god good morning holy spirit ask god how he's doing good morning god how are you this morning before you start asking him for what you need say how are you god good morning holy spirit good
[01:26:53] morning, Jesus. The word of God says that we come into his gates with thanksgiving. We come into his courts with praise. When we do those two things, when we come into the presence of God with
[01:27:09] thanksgiving, with a heart of gratitude, all of a sudden our needs pale in comparison to what he's done for us. Amen. And then get into the word and find him. Find him in every book of the Bible.
[01:27:23] He's there. He's there. And pray and ask the Holy Spirit to begin to show you. And I promise you that he will open up his word and he will show you some things that'll just blow your mind.
[01:27:35] And that's my prayer for you tonight.
[01:27:38] Is, Father, that as we open up your word, as we pray, Father God, your Holy Spirit will come alongside and will give us wisdom and insight into the word.
[01:27:48] That as we pray, Father God, the Holy Spirit will fill that room with supernatural power and anointing, Father, that will prepare us for the day that we're going to face.
[01:27:59] I thank you, Father, that we're not chasing after your word for knowledge we're not chasing after your word to win arguments but we're chasing after our words to be transformed and to build a relationship with
[01:28:11] you father you're such a good good god that you gave us your word you revealed yourself in your word and lord you gave us a prayer you gave us a prayer language that we can pray to you

[01:28:38] father god as they seek your guidance father god that your holy spirit would speak clearly and concisely to them as we as we build father god our lives with the word and with the holy spirit
[01:28:50] father i lift up our young ones father god lord that no weapon formed against them will prosper and no one will touch them with evil intent father lord i lift up our youth father god as

[01:29:42] relationship turn the hearts of the father of the sons back to the father so father i just praise you and i thank you tonight father for your word i thank you for everything father god that you've
[01:29:57] done tonight and we pray all of these things father in jesus mighty name amen and amen thank you church and you're dismissed hallelujah
